This is an effective desktop replacement with a glorious big, high-resolution screen and good sound capabilities. It works fast and efficiently. In fact, the only part of the package that doesn't impress entirely is the touchscreen. It's not bad, exactly, but not as responsive as it could be. If you have a touch-sensitive phone like the Google Nexus One or the iPhone, it may disappoint using the multi-touch screen here because it's not as quick to respond as it should be. The keyboard is too spongy for comfortable typing, but this is one of only a small number of disappointments on a big, powerful machine.

By offering improved graphics and audio performance, Dell's Studio 17 is a great alternative to its Studio 15 for those that require extra multimedia power and don't mind the larger chassis size. Unless you require cutting-edge gaming power, this is a fantastic home laptop.

The Dell Studio 17 is a solid laptop and ships in a variety of configurations starting at $700, so almost anyone can afford the basics. Stock, it's a sedately handsome portable, but you can order it with a graphic or with a brighter color than our dark red on the lid to set your laptop apart from the crowd.

The new Studio 17 is an impressive laptop, but we're not totally convinced there's a big market for touch-screen laptops. Although fun at first, it wasn't long before we cast the touch-screen controls aside in favour of the keyboard and touch pad method. On the plus side, it's reasonably priced considering the fast processor, large screen and mid-range graphics card, so it's not like you're paying a huge premium for the touch-screen.

Dell's Studio lineup eclipses their Inspirons in pretty much every way. Better builds, better parts, better features, and in the long run, better values. So how does the Studio 17 stand on its own? Pretty well, actually.

For the present the new Studio series by Dell is available in two sizes. On the one hand there is the Studio 15, which has a compact 15.4 inch wide screen format. On the other hand there is also the 17 inch model called Dell Studio 17, which was especially designed for all those who appreciate a big display with much overview. But, the Studio 17 does not only take advantage of a bigger size, but also of more powerful hardware components, i.e, an Intel processors and ATI graphics card, and bigger reserve capacity...
