Sony BRAVIA KDL-46Z5500 Pro Reviews

Take the usual Sony quality, add even backlighting, and you've got a brilliant, all-round TV

Sony’s TVs regularly offer stylish design, effectively implemented innovations and striking picture quality. And all that’s true here. But this is a pricey TV and the attention-grabbing LED backlighting of rival sets may attract you instead. Despite this absence, the other features, like the excellent Bravia Engine 3 image processing set-up and the headline 200Hz frame rate, mean the image is sharp, bright and immersive.

Clearly, I'm a fan of this TV. It does the basics right. As with most screens these days, there are bells and whistles – such as AppliCast, Sony's web access features, and DLNA certification – but they're largely irrelevant. Instead, it's good, old-fashioned performance that's won me round. And it's certainly worthy of the Sony legend.

There's a big part of me that wants to love the 46Z5500. For as well as looking resplendent in Sony's most appealing design for ages, the set's 200Hz processing is excellent, and its HD pictures in particular are for the vast majority of the time really quite superb.
