Sony Bravia VPL-VW85 Pro Reviews

ITreviews‘s review Edit

Yes it's a hefty price tag, but for the serious Home Cinema lover, Sony's answer to JVC's D-ILA range provides excellent sharpness and colour authentication with increased smoothness and easy remote controlling.

This is a sublime projector, but in terms of performance per pound, it’s not quite five-star stuff

ProjectorCentral‘s review Edit

The Sony BRAVIA VPL-VW85 is a very impressive home theater projector, designed for the cinema enthusiast who wants to put the best possible image in a light-controlled environment. Despite its low 800-lumen rating, it has the brightness to drive a low-gain screen up to 160" diagonal. It has excellent color and very good contrast, giving it a solid three-dimensional look. It has some digital noise and a less-than-perfect frame interpolation system, as well as some stiff competition, so it is not the undisputed king of the $8,000 price bracket. Nevertheless, if you're looking for a high-performance home cinema projector, the VW85 is a great option.

The VW85 has some excellent attributes and offers a performance that is within a few whiskers of reference level.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

In summary, the VPL-VW85 is hard to beat for the price. It's not a revolution compared to the VW80, but it is a good step forward. LCoS currently looks like the horse to back for projection systems, and so far, the VW85 is the race leader in this price category.

Home Theater‘s review Edit

I could be curmudgeonly about the odd gamma in the auto iris settings and the nonintuitive RCP color management system. I could talk about the lack of a blue-only mode to better check the color and tint settings and the quality of the color decoder. But no video display is perfect. The important point is that Sony has continued to refine its SXRD projectors while holding the line on the price. The result is a great projector that, while not inexpensive, should be on your shopping list even if you’re willing and able to pay much, much more.

As well as succeeding where its predecessor did not in justifying its price hike over Sony's latest entry-level SXRD model, the VW85 sets a really high new standard for the £5,000 sector of the projector market. Will JVC's new D-ILA models manage to be even better? Well, sadly I just don't know right now. But man, it's going to be fun finding out…
