The Acer Aspire One 721 isn’t the fastest 11.6 inch laptop I’ve tested. It doesn’t have the best graphics performance. And it doesn’t have the longest battery life. But it’s among the best performing laptops I’ve tested in its class, which is saying a lot since this machine is so much cheaper than the competition.

Like the recently tested Aspire One 521, the Aspire One 721 shows up in 11.6" format with Athlon II Neo, DDR3-RAM, ATI HD4225 and HDMI and goes head to head with the Intel-based netbook competition.

If we had to choose we'd go with the 721 - for $80 more than the 521 you get more than just a secondary machine with its wider screen and keyboard. Of course, if you consistently demand more than four hours of battery life you'll want to go with an Intel ULV laptop, but most of them cost north of $700. And well, that's exactly what AMD's going for - Acer now has two incredibly affordable and portable laptops that pack more performance than most netbooks and budget ultraportables on the market.

Even if you don't leave the house with your notebook often, you probably want it to last more than 3 hours on a charge, especially when it weighs less than 3 pounds. That's why we don't recommend the Aspire One 721-3574. The $429 price of this AMD machine is attractive, and you get better performance than a netbook and a full-size keyboard, but there are better options in the sub-$500 range.
