Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

Great looks and operational simplicity, plus image quality to rival enthusiast-oriented compacts – it’s a little on the pricey side though.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

This High Speed IXUS is a gem of a compact camera that delivers continuous shooting and some interesting HD video features. Unfortunately you pay a high price for the privilege of owning these exotic features and we suspect you won't use them all that often. The price is the only thing standing between this camera and a Recommended award.

Camera Labs‘s review Edit

There's no denying the Canon IXUS 300 HS / SD4000 IS is a good solid compact. It combines the slick build and great auto modes of the IXUS / ELPH range, but adds much faster continuous shooting, manual controls and superior low light capabilities to the mix, resulting in a good-looking but powerful camera.

DigitalCameraReview‘s review Edit

The SD4000 IS arrives with a lot of fanfare directed primarily towards its back-illuminated sensor and fast (at wide angle) zoom lens, and these are certainly the hardware that will distinguish this camera in the crowded field of 3 to 5x compact digitals.

Macworld‘s review Edit

As an everyday, pocketable point-and-shoot camera that offers some manual controls and stellar image quality, the Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS gets our wholehearted recommendation. Casual snapshooters who want access to controls beyond auto and scene modes will be delighted with its performance, but they also might want to consider spending $50 more for the even-more-versatile PowerShot S90.

PhotographyBLOG‘s review Edit

The Canon IXUS 300 HS is a largely successful attempt to marry the style of the IXUS range with a fast lens and excellent image sensor, marred somewhat by an eye-watering price and a lack of refinement in the handling department.

The Imaging Resource‘s review Edit

Combining high quality with high style, Canon has integrated an f/2 lens into a compact Digital ELPH design and called it the PowerShot SD4000. Don't let the Canon SD4000's diminutive size and attractive touchable design fool you; it's capable of capturing some beautiful images on par with more advanced (and even more expensive) cameras. Though the f/2 aperture is only achievable at the widest, 28mm setting, the Canon SD4000 is a champ in low light. Along with the bright lens, the Canon SD4000's impressive, 10-megapixel sensor with BSI technology did well in keeping noise down at ISO 800. And though it struggled at ISO 3,200, it performed better than most compacts in this class.

DP Review‘s review Edit

The SD4000 IS fits into a very well established line of cameras that have tended to get good reviews for being dependable, well-polished little cameras. And, despite our sample's matte-black finish, the SD4000 IS has that same lustre. It does exactly what you expect, does it well and without fuss. There are the now almost compulsory flourishes - miniature mode and face self-timer being prime examples, but we found most of them to be either fun or functional and, on the whole, well implemented.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Canon's pricey top-of-the-line Elph, the SD4000 IS excels at low-light shooting, but if that's not a top priority, you can get more features for less in competing pocket shooters.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

A bright, wide-angle lens and a high-sensitivity sensor add up to very good low-light photos and fast performance for the Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The 10-megapixel Canon 300 HS is another step up for pocket-sized photography - a small, beautifully-designed camera with stonking image quality and a massive feature list.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Canon Ixus cameras have become a benchmark for compact cameras. The Canon IXUS 300 HS is no exception. It delivers clean and clear images and video footage across a range of shooting and light conditions and is a joy to use. With some fun functions to try out, you get to experiment with photography styles, but you don't sacrifice optic quality or manual functions for the sake of gimmicky extras. In short, a lovely camera to take you from point-and-shoot to pointedly shooting for particular effects.

ephotozine‘s review Edit

Sitting at the top of the Ixus range, the 300HS has a premium price tag, which I feel is justified by the performance alone. Hopefully other manufacturers who continue to squeeze as many pixies (sorry, pixels) into their cameras as possible will take note as this approach often isn't the route to best quality.Besides the excellent image quality, the camera's build quality is superb being made of excellent materials. It feels like it is built to last, and with image quality as good as this it should give those who purchase this camera enjoyment for a long time to come.

LetsGoDigital‘s review Edit

The Canon IXUS 300 HS is a stylish design camera with a high image quality. It is a camera for the design-conscious consumer with an eye for image quality. The technical specifications make the Canon 300HS distinguish itself from the masses. The fine image quality together with the design, form a fine combination. It is a bit pricey, but experience has shown that this does not have to be an objection for this target group.

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

The IXUS 300 HS is a very good camera, with a nice easy-to use controls, a good range of features, decent performance and excellent image quality, especially at higher ISO settings. Build quality and handling are very good, and the design looks stylish and contemporary. However it doesn't offer any decisive advantage over cheaper products from rival manufacturers, or even some of Canon's own other models, and the ludicrously high price is a major disincentive. If it comes down to around £250 you can add another point to the overall score.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

The Canon IXUS 300 HS certainly meets up to the implication of high speed in its name, though it is worth noting the lower resolutions for the speediest burst modes and when capturing slow-motion video. The camera still has a fast 3.7fps burst mode and comes equipped with 720p HD movie capture, so can still be met in high regard for those demanding a fairly top-spec compact camera. Plus it undoubtedly looks gorgeous, takes decent photos and is simple to use effectively.
