Sony Alpha NEX-5 Pro Reviews

www.whatdigitalcamera.com‘s review Edit

Although compact-like in appearance, don't let the exterior fool you - the Sony NEX-5 produces class-leading images that outshine some stiff competition in the Micro System Cameras sector. Many will love its pick-up-and-shoot ease of use, though it's not without its errors - the lack of buttons for control and amount of menu digging required to adjust options may frustrate more advanced users. Otherwise the AF system is relatively fast and accurate and the variety of creative modes are all very accessible. However, for those looking for a more DSLR-like model with an electronic viewfinder and multitude of function buttons then the NEX may not suit; for those looking for the smallest camera of its type with HD movie capture capability and superb image quality then this is where the NEX-5 really hits the nail on the head.

DP Review‘s review Edit

The NEX-5 is a dramatic and original approach to camera design, offering some of the best image quality its class in a tiny, sleek body. It's not perfect as a camera to just point-and-shoot but in the hands of someone willing to take a little control is capable of superb results.

reghardware‘s review Edit

The NEX-5 is a quality compact camera with the most important feature sticking out the front. Compared to a DSLR, Sony has given us the bare bones out the back and a good, but currently narrow choice of three lenses. Admittedly, this isn't a very big range but that will surely change and there are adapter options too.

expertreviews‘s review Edit

Of course, Sony says that the camera isn’t aimed at DSLR users but there are glaring omissions in the intelligent auto mode. Thankfully, these haven’t spilled over into the program auto mode and that’s the mode in which we most enjoyed using the NEX-5. If you find yourself using this mode on your existing camera then the NEX-5 will likely be just what the doctor ordered.

Geeky Gadgets‘s review Edit

What we liked about the Sony Nex-5 is that you get many of the features that you would find on a DSLR, the ability to change lenses when you need to, plus the range of features on offer make the NEX-5 an excellent camera.

Sony's NEX-5 (and NEX-3) interchangeable lens compact digitals are the latest additions to a class that has only recently seen competition arrive to contest sales with the class founders.

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

The Sony NEX-5 is a very impressive debut into the compact system camera class. It is the smallest interchangeable lens camera on the market, but has outstanding build quality, plenty of useful features, excellent performance and the kind of still image and HD video quality you'd be lucky to get from a digital SLR. It really raises the stakes in the compact system camera market.

PhotographyBLOG‘s review Edit

Lacking the charm of the Olympus Pen series, the usability of the Panasonic G range and Samsung NX10, or the quirkiness and lateral thinking behind the Ricoh GXR, Sony is majoring on its all-conquering brand name and ready-made mass-market audience/appeal to make the NEX-5 (and NEX-3 little brother) a practical if not quite loveable option.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

The NEX-5 is likely to have a polar split of opinion: on the one hand it is ultra compact (yet the lenses are rather chunky to match the sensor format) meaning it's easy for get-up-and-go point-and-shoot photography using the intelligent Auto mode; on the other hand its full manual controls are tricky to access quickly which may frustrate more advanced users.

LetsGoDigital‘s review Edit

When we follow the philosophy behind the Sony NEX-5, then we can speak of a successful first introduction. The Sony NEX-5 chooses its own way, and if this is the most successful way, should become clear this year. Sony has in any case shown daring and knows how to produce a remarkable system camera. The amateur photographer will undoubtedly be rewarded for its step up from a compact to the NEX-5, with a higher image quality and more creative freedom of photography. The Sony NEX-5 is an excellent choice for that target group. The serious or hobby photographer will in our opinion be a bit less inclined to look at the NEX-5, as the competition in the form of Micro Four Thirds, among others, is still just a bit too serious for that.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

For a lot of people, the excellent high-sensitivity photo quality, competitive performance, and an ultracompact body will likely outweigh the Sony Alpha NEX-5's quirks and operational annoyances.

The Imaging Resource‘s review Edit

Sony has done just what they needed to: They've shaken up the camera market. Even though they were fourth to the Single Lens Direct-view digital camera category, the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 are unique cameras that will be remembered for their design as well as their excellent image quality.
