Dell Inspiron 15R Pro Reviews

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

The Dell Inspiron 15R is not exactly a laptop that will awe you with its design - the same can be said of its tech specs as well. It has a simple design and its specs are oriented towards those users looking to get a home laptop on an economical budget. In our test benchmarks, it performed well. However given some of the laptop's drawbacks, such as the keys being springy, there are better alternatives available in the market.

With the 15R, Dell has put together a versatile 15.6in budget to midrange laptop that doesn’t compromise on connectivity. Relatively minor weaknesses with its keyboard aside, it holds up well overall, with the interchangeable lids being a great way to change the design according to your mood or to match the colour of your shoes (if you’re that way inclined). Unfortunately, at the moment its pricing doesn’t make it the most competitive option out there, and without other areas where it truly excels, it’s worth checking out alternatives.

You can't really go wrong with SandyBridge, and Dell's delivered a workhorse of a home laptop. It's got enough power to handle media playback, video editing and 3D gaming, and at the same time, enough battery life to work just about anywhere. The low price means you're getting a lot of bang for your buck. We're not so sure about some of the software bundle - for one thing we've never been fond of the Dell Stage environment, and it really doesn't work well on a standard laptop, with its large touch friendly icons. Still, it's easy enough to uninstall, and it's certainly not a reason to reject this otherwise very capable machine. And of course, if you don't like the default black case, you can just order another from the Dell web site - if you don’t mind the price.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

Dell's Inspiron 15R is an attractively priced budget consumer laptop with a welcome set of up-to-date features and design options, but beware of the cost of customizations.

Notebookcheck‘s review Edit

The Dell Inspiron 15R has attractive battery runtimes due to the graphics card incorporated into the processor and their energy saving mechanisms. However, the Inspiron 15R is not only dazzling. For example, the keyboard was rather disappointing in the test, although the requirements for a good keyboard are actually given. But the basically very spongy typing feel and its permanent yielding spoil this. The Inspiron 15R will definitely not be interesting for gamers. The Intel graphics incorporated into the processor just doesn't supply enough performance for the latest games. This also generally applies to the alternatively available HD 6470M graphics solution. Newbies in the notebook market can however definitely consider the Dell Inspiron 15R, if they can live with the keyboard.

Dell have given the Inspiron R a total makeover with a few new features and cheaper price tag, with the Sandy Bridge CPU providing a much appreciated boost to overall performance and some extra battery life.

Decent performance and a good selection of expansion ports are the 15R's highlights, but its overall build quality and decent screen make it an award winner.

The Dell Inspiron 15R-2728MRB is a solid desktop replacement laptop offering Core i5 power, a Blu-ray drive, and a strong feature set. However, graphics performance is not its strong suit, nor is battery life.

The Dell Inspiron 15R-1847MRB is a starter desktop replacement that has plenty of horsepower as long as you steer clear of 3D intensive games and road travel.

NotebookReview‘s review Edit

The Inspiron 15R is a budget-friendly 15.6-inch notebook based around the latest Intel platform. With a base configuration including the Intel Core i3 370M processor, 4GB of RAM, and Intel GMA HD graphics, the 15R easily outperforms budget and midrange notebooks of yesteryear. For the average user, this machine is more than capable for pretty much all activities except gaming. Even when it came to decoding HD movies, the 15R handled it with ease. With a starting price of $549, the 15R deserves a spot on your shopping list if you are looking for a new notebook.

For day-to-day computing tasks, the Dell Inspiron i15R-2106MRB desktop replacement laptop provides more than enough power, and does so at a reasonable price.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

Dell has selected a decent Core i5 specification allied to Radeon HD 5470 graphics, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 15.6-inch screen with HD resolution. That's all perfectly acceptable and we were smitten by the good looks of the Inspiron 15R, but the layout left something to be desired and the price was a touch too steep for our taste.

An Intel Core i5 430M processor at 2.27 GHz (Turbo Boost to 2.5 GHz), an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 with 1024 GDDR3 VRAM, four GB DDR3 RAM from Hyundai Electronics (upgradeable up to a total of eight GB), a reflective 15.6-inch TrueLife display with a maximum resolution of 1366x768 pixels and a 500 GB hard disk - this overall package is available from Dell for around 779 Euro, and goes by the name Inspiron 15R. Over the course of the review the Inspiron 15R really convinced us with its fancy visuals, the clean workmanship and its associated stability. However, the inner values also seem to add up. Indeed the Inspiron 15R has no high-end components, yet the hardware belongs to the current generation. The Inspiron 15R only shows weaknesses in system noise and cooling, which can eventually be remedied with a future BIOS update.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

For the money, the Dell Inspiron 15R is a great machine. There are few niggles, but these are more than compensated for by the power and usability on offer from the laptop. The net result is this one of the best machines around.

Dell's updated Inspiron line has a slightly revamped design, but more importantly still offers workhorse performance for a minimal investment.
