Canon EOS 5D Mark II Pro Reviews

DigitalCameraReview‘s review Edit

When the original 5D was introduced, Canon made it possible for photographers with relatively modest budgets to purchase a full-frame DSLR. Now, for about the same price, photographers can easily put their hands on a full-frame, high resolution camera with HD video.

reghardware‘s review Edit

The video capabilities of the Canon EOS 5D MkII make it ideal for news gatherers, indie filmmakers or even the all-consuming Internet. As a DSLR, it’s a real upgrade from the old 5D. It’s easier to navigate and produces better images, thanks to a hefty megapixel count. While it appears reassuringly expensive, when you consider what you are getting, it doesn’t really seem that much. After all, the EOS 5D MkII is a great all-rounder. It’s not even Canon’s flagship model, but at the moment, nothing can catch it.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Like its predecessor, Canon's EOS 5D Mark II is a great camera that offers exceptional image quality and a great interface. We'd like to see a few additional features (better auto bracketing and an intervalometer, for starters) but these are quibbles. For users who've been wanting a full-frame SLR, there's no doubt that the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is a great option. Kudos to Canon for taking a great camera and finding ways to make it better.

ephotozine‘s review Edit

I got the best colour, sharpness and noise results from the Canon. I think it's these areas that are the most important because a camera could take 100fps, but if the image quality isn't as good, there's little point. Add to that the lens range available, a good professional support service and nearly all lens hire companies catering for Canon and you're onto a winner.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The 5D feels tough, yet also surprisingly compact for a full-frame DSLR. Ultimately the Canon EOS 5D Mark II no longer has a single, conclusive advantage – it's going to have to rely on a combination of things, like its Live View, its HD movie mode and, perhaps most of all, its superb build, design and handling and the backup of Canon's extensive and long-established professional lens and accessory range.

Shutterbug‘s review Edit

Тhe 5D Mark II might in many ways be regarded as a 50D in 5D clothing, at least in terms of handling, but that difference becomes greater when you consider the larger sensor, megapixel count, and of course video capability and stronger body heft, weight, and build. But is there enough of a difference to make you go out and spend the extra bucks for the 5D Mark II?

Photography Review‘s review Edit

The Canon EOS 5D Mark II makes me think one thing – low light, low light, low light. Yes, the 1080p HD video is cool, but that’s not enough to get me to buy it. I’m a photographer not a filmmaker. I’d buy the 5D Mark II to shoot sunset and post-sunset action photos. I’d buy it so I never have to use a flash. I’d buy it so I can shoot at ISO 800 and make prints with no noise.

The Imaging Resource‘s review Edit

The Canon 5D Mark II is indeed a premium digital SLR. It's not just the very high resolution that makes it stand out, but the excellent high ISO performance, effectively giving you the freedom to shoot handheld in conditions where you'd normally need a flash or a tripod.

The-Digital-Picture‘s review Edit

The 5D II delivers excellent image quality from a solid-performing body. It is a great body for beginning photographers with big aspirations. It is a great upgrade to all owners of non-1-Series bodies - and even some 1-Series body owners are going to want one. I enthusiastically recommend the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

The Canon EOS 5D Mk2 represents the state of the art of current digital SLR design. Its combination of professional-level build quality, superb handling, high-speed performance, class-leading image quality and the added bonus of HD video recording and its other advanced features will be more than enough to satisfy even the most demanding photographer, and it is sure to match the popularity of its illustrious predecessor.

Digital Trends‘s review Edit

This video-recording D-SLR is a true breakthrough with quality that’s far better than the Nikon D90. We only wish Canon engineers spent some time noise dampening the mic; the poor sound detracts from an otherwise top-notch video experience. And this is ostensibly a digital camera, not a camcorder. As for its still photographic abilities, they’re winners too.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

The EOS 5D Mk II had tough act to follow in the 5D and it has some tough competition with Nikon’s D700 and Sony’s Alpha 900 being its primary targets. However, it almost pulls it off, offering Alpha 900-alike resolution and D700-alike high ISO performance. But it has that 1080p video trick to no doubt help smooth the new Canon into your kit bag.

Camera Labs‘s review Edit

The EOS 5D Mark II is one of Canon’s most powerful DSLRs to date, capable of delivering superb image quality with decent handling and all the latest bells and whistles. The movie mode is also an excellent addition, and while it’s not a practical replacement for a camcorder for most amateurs, the results can be spectacular and independent film makers will love it.

PhotographyBLOG‘s review Edit

The ability to shoot full HD video with a DSLR camera has gained the 5D Mark II a lot of press coverage in the weeks leading up to it shipping, fuelled by the release of some jaw-dropping video footage from independent film-makers. This is the key phrase - "film-makers" - that you need to consider if you're attracted by the 5D's video functionality.

DP Review‘s review Edit

Back in August 2005 Canon 'defined a new DSLR category' (their words) with the EOS 5D. Unlike any previous 'full frame' sensor camera, the 5D was the first with a compact body (i.e. not having an integral vertical grip) and has since then proved to be very popular, perhaps because if you wanted a full frame DSLR to use with your Canon lenses and you didn't want the chunky EOS-1D style body then the EOS 5D has been your only choice.
