Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Pro Reviews

Fudzilla‘s review Edit

The Mini 12 is basically a mixed bag. Although it offers a vastly superior screen compared to regular netbooks, it still comes up short in some departments.

Though it has a larger screen than other netbooks, the Mini 12 doesn't have the performance to make the most of it. It may be light and thin, but the average battery life means there are better options for mobile use. It's also let down by its poor keyboard and touch pad.

Overall, it’s difficult to recommend the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 – there are just too many problems and a lot of missed opportunities. A lot of the issues can be pointed at the Atom Z520, which just isn’t a fast enough processor for this class of machine – it was designed for MIDs and UMPCs – and it’ll never deliver the kind of computing experience we’ve come to expect from a 12-inch notebook.

Knock £80 of the price of the Linux-based Mini 12 and replace – or give the option of replacing - the HDD with an SDD and the 12 would come closer to the top of our netbook 'must have' list. As it stands, nice bit of kit though it is, we can't shake the feeling that it's just too expensive and too conservative. Nor, to be honest, will we ever be wholly convinced that a fragile – and in this case slow - HDD is the storage medium of choice for an SCC rather than a drop-it-while-running-and-no-harm-done SSD.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Sure, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is expensive relative to other netbooks, but it's the only one with a 12-inch screen. An undersize keyboard and the slow-spinning hard drive are signs that it won't threaten the market for more expensive ultraportables, though the screen alone should rid it of some netbook stereotypes.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

At least the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 has its niche. It's a netbook with a big screen, netbook being the operative word. You're an enthusiast – this is a fine machine, but you may as well save some money and grab an equally capable N270. You can thank us later.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

It’s difficult to see the Mini 12 as value for money. The specifications are disappointing at this price point, and the 12-inch display also means users are more likely to consider buying a proper laptop. While the big display may confuse matters, however, it’s also this machine’s saving grace. It allows for a larger and more comfortable interface, and the quality of the screen makes it a valid proposition for those wanting to work longer hours. Just consider your needs carefully, however, as despite the size, it’s still a netbook.

Notebookcheck‘s review Edit

Dell could have certainly hit the bull's eye with the 12-inch "netbook" design. The present growth of the traditional netbooks shows a clear trend toward the models with larger displays and more user friendly keyboards. Dell goes a step further with the Inspiron Mini 12 and offers, so to speak, a subnotebook according to the netbook model.

computershopper‘s review Edit

Filling a niche within a niche, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is for netbook buyers who want a larger screen but not the cost - or performance - of a full-fledged ultraportable.
