If a high-quality screen is of primary concern, the HP HDX16-1005ea is the way to go. Looks aside this is another of the Centrino 2 generation of Intel based laptops and for all of Intel's talk of low-power, battery life extending technology the HDX16 only ran for a little over 2-hours in our test. Hardly the next-generation sort of battery performance we'd like. But this machine isn't designed for out-and-out portability.

Overall, the HDX16 is a deeply impressive laptop. Offering the full power of the larger machines, it features a screen that's every bit as good, wrapped in a stylish and high-quality chassis.

HP promises "chic design and high end entertainment" with the HDX16. In fact you're dazzled by all of the high gloss and chrome surfaces when opening the laptop. The reflective 16-inch display with full HD resolution, as well the touchpad, which could also have been a makeup mirror, contribute their parts equally. Equipped with a broad range of interfaces as well as solid hardware components (Core 2 Duo CPU, 9600M GT graphics) the laptop leaves little to be desired when it comes to multimedia.

If you're after a fully-featured desktop replacement with "all the trimmings", the HP HDX 16 delivers on pretty much every level and represents superb value for money. In fact, we can't think of any reasonable reason not to buy it.
