Intel Core i5-655K Pro Reviews

motherboards‘s review Edit

Overclockers and Tweakers wanting to get the most out of their new CPUs will appreciate the fact that these two CPUs will have more options to overclock due to their unlocked cores. The 655K unlocked multiplier gave me easily 4.3GHz over 1GHz overclock over the reference clock using an air cooler. Temperatures were under 40C even under load.

While neither the Core i7-875K or the i5-655K break any new records in our table they both do very well. I have pretty much made the case already but it bears repeating: the default performance of the new Core i7-875K and Core i5-655K fall right in line with the competing parts currently existing in Intel’s own product lineup.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

The dual-core Intel Core i5 655K's value proposition isn't good. The high-frequency overclock cannot compensate for the lack of cores. We also doubt if users will bother with the chip's integrated graphics. Overall, Intel's Core i7 875K and Core i5 655K are semi-interesting chips that may tickle the fancy of a few enthusiasts.

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit

At the same time, an unlocked Core i5-655K at $216 doesn’t sound daunting at all. For a processor that ran stable for us at 4.66 GHz, you couldn’t really ask for sweeter dual-core chip to take the place of Intel’s Core 2 Duo E8500 and E6300 in the annals of overclocking history.

hardwarecanucks‘s review Edit

We are less enthused with the Core i5-655K though. We would have liked to see Intel release a similar (if lower clocked) chip in the $150 range. Such a processor could at least be considered a possible contender against AMD's extremely popular Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition, which retails for $99 and is also multiplier-unlocked. Yes, the Core i5-655K is significantly faster across the board than the Phenom II X2, but the X2 555 C3 revision processors are certainly no slouch in the overclocking department, and there is always the possibility of unlocking their two additional cores.

If you're looking for an easily overclockable upgrade chip for your LGA 1156-based PC, you might find the 655K appealing, but most users will find better value in other Intel or AMD CPUs.

bit-tech‘s review Edit

We're tempted to think that the i5-655K could be one for system builders and sellers. Its unlocked multiplier allows the application of a quick, easy, cheap pre overclock to a system which can then be sold at a premium. Considering the strong showing of the i5-750 in almost every situation, and the fact that it's much cheaper than the i5-655K and costs only £5 more than the X6 1055T, the Core i5-750 is still our first choice for a mid-range CPU.

benchmarkreviews‘s review Edit

The Core i5 655K performed decently against other CPUs. Thanks to features like Turbo Boost and Hyper-Threading, this sample was able to outperform the Athlon II X3 in nearly all the tests when they were targeted at multi-core solutions. Of course, if the benchmark measured pure raw Gigahertz, the Core i5 655K performed even better than 4-cores processors thanks to its higher frequency.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The Extreme Edition CPUs from Intel are the real performance daddies of the desktop world. Costing over £800 for a little slab of silicon though they really should be. So what is it about these Extreme chips that makes them so damned fast? It's the unlocked multipliers that allow the extreme tweakers to overclock the nuts off these processors.
