When Canon introduced the SX10 IS, its 20x zoom closed that gap on the competition at the time. Since then the ultrazoom lens envelope has been pushed out to 24 and 26x (and 624 and 676mm, respectively), while Canon's just introduced successor to the SX10 IS stands pat at 20x and 560mm. While the lens numbers may not have changed, the SX20 IS has elevated Canon's game over the SX10 IS in a number of ways. It's not a sweeping remake of the brand's CCD sensor flagship but rather incremental improvements to an already capable platform.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

If you want an advanced compact camera that can do just about anything then the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS digital camera is the one to shortlist! It's great for macros. it takes excellent night time photography, it has a huge zoom and built-in optical stabilisation, and it even does a good job of capturing HD video.

With a powerful zoom lens, superior battery life, best-in-class image quality, and a useful blend of shooting modes, the PowerShot SX20 IS can stand up to almost any challenge. Action photography is a weakness, due to the camera’s slow shot-to-shot times.

The Imaging Resource‘s review Edit

Well built but awkward to handle, the Canon SX20 IS will nonetheless be popular with those already familiar with Canon long zoom cameras. There are certainly more external controls than most digicams offer, and the one-touch activation of Movie mode is still quite inspired, even as its adopted by the competition across more cameras.

Camera Labs‘s review Edit

Canon’s PowerShot SX20 IS delivers a number of minor but mostly useful enhancements to its predecessor, and therefore makes a best-seller an even more compelling prospect. Of the new upgrades, the most welcome is without a doubt the inclusion of HD video recording, while along with an HDMI port better completes the overall feature-set.
