Amazon Kindle DX Pro Reviews

Engadget‘s review Edit

Not a lot has changed here -- but Amazon's given a pretty decent upgrade to the DX, a large reader that was originally targeted at students. While there's surely a demographic out there for super-sized devices in general, we're not sure that students on-the-go are the ones for this device. As our previous review of the DX stated, for now at least, a laptop, highlighter, and text still win in most cases.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

The Amazon Kindle DX Global Wireless Edition is just that bit too large and unwieldy for our taste, and we don't like that we can't use the Web browser as we aren't in the US, nor that the on-board dictionary is American English. The large screen is easy on the eye, though, and we do like the idea of being able to populate it with etexts without a PC.

The Kindle DX's 9.7-inch screen offers the best reading experience on an e-book device yet, but you'll pay quite a premium for that bigger screen.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

While it has a hard time competing with Apple's iPad in terms of functionality, the less expensive 2010 Kindle DX will appeal to those looking for a large, dedicated e-reader with an e-ink display.

Macworld‘s review Edit

At $380, the Amazon Kindle DX continues to excel as a large-format E-Ink-based e-reader, for both Kindle books and PDFs. And its lower price makes it that much more attractive. But prospective buyers will need to consider the trade-off of purchasing this e-reader versus a multipurpose tablet like Apple’s $499 iPad. E-Ink displays continue to hold a battery life and readability advantage (especially in bright sunlight), but the LCD-based iPad is more responsive and supports color.

Engadget‘s review Edit

We're just not sure Amazon put enough thought into the Kindle DX to justify the launch hype - fundamentally, it really is just a Kindle 2 with a larger screen and more storage, and while that means the core experience of simply reading a book is somewhat more pleasant, all of the Kindle 2's limitations are still front and center, and in some ways made worse. We'd probably feel a lot differently if the $489 pricetag was lowered through newspaper subscription subsidy or cheaper content fees...

MacNN‘s review Edit

It's an impressive piece of technology in many regards, and a great reading device. Real technophiles might be perturbed by the screen flashes, or shortcomings of the web browser and audio, but with an excellent build quality, healthy legibility and lots of storage space and potential content, the DX can be a bibliophile's dream come true.

LAPTOP Magazine‘s review Edit

This large-screen eReader features an improved display and a lower price, but it still doesn't offer a robust enough experience for students.

The DX sports many design improvements, including better placement of speakers and buttons. Unfortunately those improvements don’t extend to the keyboard which is much worse than previous Kindle keyboards. The added screen size means more to view at once and fewer pages to turn. The native PDF support is a big plus.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Without spending some quality time reading from the Amazon Kindle DX (Graphite) in sunlit conditions it's impossible to give a definitive thumbs up to Amazon's updated e-reader. But on first impressions, the new Amazon Kindle DX is a sure-fire winner.

With a much-larger screen and more storage, the Amazon Kindle DX is a nice addition to the Kindle family. But its almost-$400 price tag might be prohibitively high.

CrunchGear‘s review Edit

I’m convinced that the Kindle – as a brand – is the book reader to buy. Unless you’re into piracy, getting first run books onto any other reader is too convoluted and the UI and Kindle system is the best, hands down. I’ve used the Sony Reader and a few other e-readers and the Kindle is made for real readers i.e. people who read and want a seamless reading experience. If you like to read, get one. If you like to download PDFs and TXT files – say you’re a slash fiction fan – get something else.

SlashGear‘s review Edit

Objectively, the Kindle DX is a great piece of hardware. If the few ergonomic issues – absent left-hand buttons being the most significant – don’t affect you, then working with such a broad expanse of E Ink display is great. Problem is, most general readers will be quite content with the 6-inches offered by the cheaper Kindle 2, and from the subset of users left over many will balk at the DX’s price.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

For such a smoothly polished design, the DX does have some rough edges. The interface needs work, the processor needs beefing up and some of the physical buttons are a little tacky. Is this the iPod for books? Yes, it is. It's classy, easy to use and will change your literary life.

The larger Kindle DX is a well rounded e-book optimized for reading textbooks and newspapers, but we wish it were less expensive.

Register Hardware‘s review Edit

Spend time with the 9.7in Kindle DX and your won't ever want to go back to a 6in e-book reader but blimey you've to pay a hefty price to be paid for such luxury. If money is no object, you won't regret the outlay, but you may want to consider waiting to see if the arrival of Apple's iPad causes Amazon to re-think its pricing strategy.
