Canon PowerShot S90 Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

An exceptional compact camera for demanding enthusiasts and affluent point-and-clickers, but it doesn't surpass Panasonic's LX3.

DigitalCameraReview‘s review Edit

I enjoyed taking pictures with the PowerShot S90. It takes excellent photos outdoors and very good pictures indoors as well. It has a high quality lens with minimal distortion. Leaving the flash off in most low light shooting situations was another bonus. It features excellent build quality and is quick and responsive.

It's a lovely little camera although personally I prefer the bulkier build of the previous S series before they ended production the first time round. The price is a decent point to start at for the amount of features available. It'll make a very good back-up camera for the photographer who likes keeping control, shooting in Raw and a good lens but may not always want to take a bulky camera system with them.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

The Canon PowerShot S90 compact digital camera is the best pocket-size model we've seen. Even though it’s a fraction of the size of a digital SLR, it provides many of the features we value in larger cameras: a fast lens, a RAW option and high ISO capture. It’s not perfect by any means. You’ll need an extra battery, the burst mode isn’t snappy and there’s still that nagging shutter lag that we usually have to endure with cameras of this type. But the Canon PowerShot S90 takes great pictures in just about any lighting situation and provides easy-to-use, intelligent controls to do so.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The biggest attractions are the fast, sharp lens, with an impressive f/2 maximum aperture, combined with an exemplary ISO performance. The layout and design of the PowerShot S90 is generally good too, and the generous rear LCD beyond criticism. The downsides are the occasionally fiddly ergonomics, the rather harsh flash, the restricted zoom, and of course, the lack of HD video recording.

Nicely made and capable of great images, the Canon PowerShot S90 is a worthy alternative to low-end DSLRs

Pocket-friendly and powerful, but inadequate battery life, VGA-only video and slow performance take the edge off its shine.

Camera Labs‘s review Edit

Canon’s PowerShot S90 is an ideal choice for enthusiasts who want a pocket camera without compromising on control and features. By essentially squeezing the PowerShot G11’s quality and control into a considerably smaller body with a brighter lens on the front, the S90 becomes one of the most desirable models in Canon’s current range.

The Canon PowerShot S90 is a superb high-spec compact camera with the emphasis on image quality and controllable versatility. The range of features, build quality and results are excellent, although the fiddly controls and slightly sluggish performance are minor disadvantages. The only real problem is the extremely high price compared to rival models.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

The Canon PowerShot S90 brings some powerful creative controls in a package that fits right into your pocket. But it is a compact camera first, and as such, delivers impressive point and shoot performance. For those looking for a little more fun, then the S90 delivers it by the bucket load.

Steve's Digicams‘s review Edit

The S90 is a welcomed addition to a long forgotten line of versatile PowerShot models. This high-end camera has loads of exposure control to offer, along with the ability to capture pleasing photos.

DP Review‘s review Edit

Photographers looking for a serious, pocket-friendly, compact camera haven't had a lot to choose from, and the S90 offers the first real competition to Panasonic's LX3, the success of which almost certainly led Canon to revive the long-running and much missed 'S' series. I may not have liked it when I first used it, but I soon found myself picking it up every time I went out the door.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

At around £370 if you shop around, the PowerShot S90 makes a lot of sense as a backup for Canon SLR users, or as a versatile, high performance compact that you won't outgrow quickly. Being able to shoot in RAW and process the files in Digital Photo Professional will obviously be a big advantage for Canon SLR users, but the PowerShot S90 is also very easy for photography novices to get to grips with.

PhotographyBLOG‘s review Edit

With the race for more megapixels momentarily slowing at consumer level, it seems that small is the new big. Just as other manufacturers have been attempting of late to introduce compacts with the power of a DSLR, the Canon PowerShot S90 is, in effect, a bridge model without that class of cameras' associated bulk and occasional operational obstreperousness. It's user friendly, without lacking the sophistication that a fairly generous helping of manual control/s provides; shame about the lack of anything approaching a grip though.

The Imaging Resource‘s review Edit

Canon gets extremely close to the ideal pocket camera with the PowerShot S90, close enough that a great majority of users will be extremely happy with it. These fall into two groups: those content to shoot primarily in Auto mode, as we're all pretty used to doing with pocket cameras, and those willing and able to take their time with the very capable Canon S90.

Patient shutterbugs will love this camera as we did, but the slow speed will try the patience of many others.

As long as you're not expecting dSLR speed in a tiny body, the Canon PowerShot S90 is an excellent compact camera for advanced amateurs.
