ASUS VG236H Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

We enjoyed 3D gaming on this monitor, but it’s very expensive and not compatible with the key standard for 3D imaging – HDMI 1.4a.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Throughout testing, the VG236H did very well. In 2D mode, it's easily one of the best looking TN panels we've tested. The colors are vivid, images are clear, and text is sharp. Although Everest Monitor Diagnostics revealed evidence of minor backlight bleed, every other test screen appeared perfect. 3D gaming performance proved to be a strong suit for the VG236H, as scenes looked clearer and brighter when compared to the Acer GD235HZ 3D monitor. Lastly, we appreciate the traditional push buttons Asus included on this monitor and much prefer them over touch-sensitive buttons.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Although the Asus is expensive for a 23in LCD monitor with a TN panel, the cost may be more than worth it should you have the necessary 3D kit as well. The reflective glass screen is annoying, but otherwise this is a very decent flat-panel and a suitable introduction to the world of 3D. We’d suggest you should try before buying, if possible. For those who want a fully immersive visual experience, and want it now, the Asus VG236H could literally unlock a whole new dimension.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

This was the first 120Hz desktop LCD I’ve gotten time with, and even before I opened the box I had heard from all around that it’s held in very high regard. Regardless of how you feel about 3D, the VG236H is an awesome choice even from the perspective of its 120Hz refresh rate. Side by side with a traditional 60Hz LCD, the difference is striking. Further, instead of getting tearing above 60 FPS like you would with vsync off on a traditional 60Hz LCD, you get smoother gameplay that just looks more fluid. I definitely can tell the difference, and now I don’t want to go back.

benchmarkreviews‘s review Edit

Overall, the ASUS VG236H performed above my expectations. The SPLENDID Video Intelligence Technology allowed the monitor to quickly switch between five viewing modes: Scenery, Standard, Theater, Game, and Night View. Each mode had it's own set of perks, but there wasn't one single SPLENDID mode that I felt should be engaged full-time. I personally tested the VG236H with several games and movies in both standard 2D and enhanced 3D environments, and there was absolutely no ghosting at any point. Some people have complained of a green hue to the picture, but none of my tests revealed this issue. I did however notice that some games became slightly darker with 3D Vision enabled, but increasing the brightness by one notch normalized this effect.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

Now at nigh-on £400 for a 23-inch monitor it does still seem rather pricey to upgrade to a 3D monitor right now, but the saving grace here is that you're getting the full 3D vision kit in the box. That's still got a retail price of over a ton on its own, making the VG236 start to sound more appealing a proposition. Before you do rush out and drop the cash on a 3D monitor though, things still ain't perfect. There's still that initial discomfort when you first start using the glasses. You can recreate it for yourself by grabbing the nearest person with worse eyesight than you and borrowing their glasses for a minute. Uncomfortable, right? That stops after a fairly short while and it starts to feel natural.
