expertreviews‘s review Edit

A well-rounded laptop that combines raw performance with the ability to play some games, while its decent keyboard, touchpad and display make it a joy to use.

The Samsung R580-JBB2 laptop is a wireless showcase, equipped with WiMax and Wireless Display technologies, as well as a Blu-ray drive for $730.

The R580 is an attractive machine: visually and on the basis of its specs and the performance they deliver. Occasional gamers will like it, as will film fans. Only the 13in-screen resolution on a 15in display disappoints.

The Samsung R580 desktop replacement laptop has two things you won't typically find at this price: a Core i5 processor and a Blu-ray drive.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

Offering impressive power and usability, the R580 is yet another great addition to the Samsung range. Its combination of high-speed network connectivity, powerful graphics and impressive array of ports nudge it ever so slightly ahead of the Dell Inspiron 1546, making it a great choice for a laptop.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

This entry level laptop uses the latest Core i5 CPU for excellent computing power. If there's one thing to like about the Samsung R580 it is its combination of affordability, power and performance. The Sony may indeed offer more, but for those who aren't really interested in having a Blu-ray drive, this is a fantastic choice that will last you for years.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

If you’re on tighter budget than the circa-£600 retail price of the Samsung R580, and don’t plan to play many computer games, look for something like the £499 Samsung R530. But if you do need better graphics potential, or just appreciate the classier build quality and slick finish, the Samsung R580 is an easy choice for performance notebook computing at a reasonable price.

This multimedia laptop has power and style, but it’s Blu-ray drive doesn’t add much value.

So you want a laptop you can show off, that has a classy and attractive look to it? But you don't want to sacrifice power or pay over the odds? Look no further. Samsung's hefty machine may not be feather-light, but it's solid, efficient and worth its asking price.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

The R580 had some serious pros and some serious cons. It's priced really well for what it is, and its specifications are worthy of praise. But the real-world performance just wasn't there (application loading, specifically). We felt that the CPU really shined during intensive tasks, but we would've preferred a more snappy desktop experience to go with it. Also a 64-bit OS should have been included since it ships with 4GB of RAM, and we would've preferred a somewhat less vivid design.

Notebookcheck‘s review Edit

The Samsung R580 Aura Hawk presents itself as an interesting value for money bargain. For currently a bit more than 800 euro, potential buyers get a fast Intel Core i5-520M (standardly 2.40 GHz) beside Nvidia's Geforce GT 330M and a 500 GB hard disk. Thus, an all-rounder suitable for computing intensive task as well as the latest games is created. Many games even ran smoothly in the native HD Ready resolution of 1366x768 pixels in our gaming session. This shouldn't hide the fact that the GT 330M isn't significantly faster than its namesake, the GT 230M.

The Samsung NP-R580-JSB1US is the best bang for the buck we've seen in a current mainstream laptop, with great processing, graphics, and Blu-ray to boot.
