ASUS Eee PC 1005PE (Seashell) Pro Reviews

techreport.com‘s review Edit

Netbooks have always been an obvious example of compromise, and the 1005PE is no different. You give up a lot of performance and functionality in exchange for awesome battery life, budget pricing, and a tiny footprint. Intel would probably be quite content to let that compromise remain intact, since netbooks have already eaten into sales of notebooks that carry higher average selling prices.

The N450 processor is clever technology, but used here offered no benefits over the previous range of netbooks. That said, the Eee PC 1005PE is a decent 10in netbook.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

The Eee PC 1005PE retains the stylish good looks of its predecessors in the Seashell range and the new Atom CPU is more energy efficient while boosting battery life, yet overall performance is only marginally improved and the price is less competitive than some netbooks.

reghardware‘s review Edit

The 1005PE delivers a small speed bump over the old 1005HA, but you'll pay a lot extra for the privilege - and still not get class-leading battery life. On this showing at least, Intel's Pine Trail platform fails to impress. It's certainly no must-have upgrade. The 1005PE is a nice netbook - make no mistake - but it's no leap forward. Older, N280-based netbooks are cheaper and will deliver similar performance and battery life.

Engadget‘s review Edit

Though we're a bit disappointed in Pine Trail's minimal performance improvement, especially in terms of streaming 720p video content, that's not to say the $380 1005PE won't be a solid, affordable choice for those looking for a 10-inch netbook with seriously impressive battery life when it goes on sale January 4th. And when it comes to netbooks, Pine Trail or not, you can't really ask for much more.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

Most of the changes relative to the older 1005HA (and 1008HA) are very minor. The LCD panel may or may not be better, depending on what particular panel you happen to get. The design doesn't appear to be any different so we can't imagine ASUS making changes to the keyboard that are clearly worse. Internally, the changes haven't resulted in a system that's significantly faster, but the one change is very noticeable. Our initial tests indicate that Pineview has improved battery life on the 1005 laptops by a whopping 25%. If you want a netbook that can last 10+ hours and you want to spend less than $400, the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE has exactly what you need.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The Asus Eee PC 1005PE is a well-rounded netbook with almost no flaws. Its solid build is further enhanced by the excellent keyboard and responsive touchpad, and network connectivity is strong. While Asus has taken few risks with this new model, it's still an excellent option for those looking for a netbook.

If you have an Asus Eee PC 1005HA or 1008HA and you’re looking for a reason to upgrade to the latest model, there’s only one here: The Asus Eee PC 1005PE gets spectacular battery life. Performance-wise, it functions like virtually every other netbook that’s been released since mid-2008.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

This retail version of the popular Eee PC Netbook, the 1005PEB, hits the required notes, and is a little less expensive than many other retail Netbooks (but more than some online models).

netbooked.net‘s review Edit

The ASUS Eee PC 1005PE takes on the same chassis as the last generation Seashell model but adds Pinetrail innards which results in an increase of battery life to just over 9 hours, web surfing with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth ON which is very impressive and reduced heat. As with the last generation, Linux compatibility is very good, multi-touch scrolling responsive and the return of the chiclet keyboard is welcome because it is better for accurate typing. Still not a fan of the glossy display and the lack of upgradable parts.

NotebookReview‘s review Edit

The Intel Pine Trail platform doesn’t bring a huge performance boost compared to the older N270 and N280-based netbooks, but it does give a huge bump in energy management. Compared to the Eee PC 1005HA which got 9 hours and 37 minutes in our original battery test, the 1005PE managed over 12 hours ... a 25 percent increase. Most of this comes from the newer system-on-a-chip design, which puts important system components like the processor, memory controller, and graphics controller on a single chip instead of spread out over the motherboard.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

The ASUS Eee PC 1005PE takes advantage of the new Atom platform, trimming down on the weight by using a slightly smaller battery while tweaking and updating the design. You'll find a slightly thinner netbook, with an improved keyboard, while still keeping the look and feel of the "Seashell" design. There's much to like about the unit, especially the almost six-hour battery life, and 1.27kg weight.

It's a nice netbook and, yes, it has the latest Atom tech. But does that make it a better than the rest? Unfortunately not.

Not yet officially released but already available - with the Eee PC 1005PE, Asus presents one of the first netbooks based on Intel's new Pine Trail range. Intel's new Atom N450 processor now contains the memory controller and the graphic engine (Intel GMA 3150), which allegedly consumes even less electricity.

Built around Intel’s new Pine Trail platform, this 10-inch netbook has a reasonable price, an excellent battery, and performance that slightly outstrips more expensive models.

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

While it doesn’t bring the changes we had hoped for, Intel’s new Atom platform and the N450 processor combine with Windows 7 to elevate the Asus Eee PC 1005PE above its predecessors. However, though it can handle 720p video and uses less power, the 1005PE's benefits aren't substantial enough to make it a must buy.
