iriver Story Pro Reviews

ITreviews‘s review Edit

Its designers have done a good job with the Story, and despite some minor niggles it remains a flexible, comfortable reader that's easy to operate and offers a range of genuinely useful advantages. However, considering many people speculate that the rise of eBooks is being hampered somewhat by the price of these devices, iRiver hasn't really done enough in this area to offer an unequivocal recommendation.

It's a well-made and stylish wireless ebook reader that offers welcome competition to the Kindle, but unfortunately its high price weighs heavily against it. It offers little that the Kindle doesn't (the SD Card slot being the main exception), and it doesn't have text-to-speech capability. The interface niggles remain from the original, and the online ebook buying experience isn't particularly slick.

As first attempts go, the iRiver Story is merit-worthy, but it’s got that unmistakable air of a work in progress. If iRiver’s record in the MP3 player market is anything to go by it’ll get it right sooner or later, but until then Sony’s range of devices remain the benchmark to follow.

A decent eBook reader but, with the Amazon Kindle on its way, the Story struggles to make a compelling case

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

It's smarter looking than the Kindle, or Cooler Reader and the built in audio playback and speaker is nice. We're not quite sure that a full qwerty keyboard was required, and note-taking is a non-starter, but the presence of multiple control buttons on the top row is great, as are the large page-turn buttons on the left and right side of the system. The relatively slow system means that reading anything other pure text (ePub, TXT, RTF, and so on) will test your patience, but the music playback and speaker turned out to be a surprisingly good.

Nicely designed and packed with features, but a little on the expensive side

Register Hardware‘s review Edit

Ideal for ePub files with updated PDF viewing, but Excel support needs improving. Still, good battery life and a decent music player make it well worth considering.
