Archos 5 internet tablet Pro Reviews

ITreviews‘s review Edit

If you'll get enough use from the massive array of features on offer from the Archos5 then there's no doubt that it's the most effective and versatile device of its type on the market. Image quality is outstanding, the touchscreen is beautifully responsive and you do get an impressive degree of media control, format support and Web browsing in the box. Upgrading the Archos5 with the necessary plug-ins or enabling key features such as the PVR functionality with the DVR station can involve considerable extra expense, though, and in raising the price of the basic 60GB unit the company may have restricted it to more serious users. But in terms of a no-compromise solution, it's difficult to think of a product that has more potential.

The Archos has a decently big screen, at 4.8 inches. At its heart lies an 800mHz processor plus Google’s Android operating system, and its graphics look superb.

Archos has done a very good job with the design of the Archos 5 Android Tablet and Android does a great job of making the platform stable and user-friendly. That said, Archos' weak point is still its own software/services. Android pretty much solves the previous issue that Archos had: its proprietary OS. Many users were complaining that their OS was not stable, so things should get much better from now on with Android.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Archos devices are always desirable - the question is: how much would you use it? But if you have room in your life for a portable video player and web browser, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet is a slick product to which Google Android has added extra functionality.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Besides the half-baked Android implementation on the latest Archos 5 Internet Tablet, not much has changed from last year's device, and the touch-screen PMP competition is only getting tougher.

CrunchGear‘s review Edit

This is Archos’ first stab at an Android device, and early adopters will likely be willing to put up with various shortcomings along the way. And, again, those looking for video and music features first and foremost won’t have too much to complain about here. But Android fans looking for a killer tablet for Android’s sake would be better off waiting to see what’s next.

The Archos 5 is a great video player, but it disappoints as a premium Android Internet tablet and GPS unit.

Putting aside the teething issues with this device, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet is a very well featured portable media player, that is, in many respects, a joy to use. The 4.8in screen makes this a first rate video player, while the extensive codec support means that you’ll be able to playback pretty much any files that you have in your video library. Music playback is also impressive, while support for both Ogg and Flac should make audiophile types happy.

Archos 5 is a great device for video playback. The screen is nice and bright and the video performance is very good. We especially like that it handles 720p content without issue, even if you'll have to fork out for the HDMI mini dock to then enjoy this content on your TV at full resolution.

Archos charges too much for too little with the standard Archos 5. To be competitive in 2010, all of this media player's optional extras should have come standard.

The Archos 5 Internet Tablet is everything the Archos 5 was, but with better performance, enhanced hardware and all the advantages Google Android brings to the party.
