Sony Walkman NWZ-S544 Pro Reviews

ITreviews‘s review Edit

The playback quality of the music and movies that we tested was very good and at its core the S544 is a decent PMP. Unfortunately it falls down in a number of areas including the Content Transfer software, limited format support, the lack of touch-screen and the price that Sony charges for a mere 8GB of storage. Oh yes, and we really don't understand the thinking behind the stereo speakers.

Files can be transferred onto the device either by drag-and-drop, or by using the simple Content Transfer software that comes packaged on the player. The Sony’s menu system is easy to use with the large icons showing you the way to go. If you ignore the speakers and focus on the picture and sound, you’ve got a competent and pocketable music player.

If you want a small media player with built in stereo speakers, then the S544 is a pretty self-recommending choice. It does everything you would expect a modern Walkman to do and the speakers make a better fist of things than you might expect. But despite thinking long and hard about it, we still can't come up with a convincing reason to actually buy a media player with speakers.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Sony's mid-level MP3 player competes with the iPod nano, and while it is superior for video or photo viewing, the interface doesn't hold a candle to Apple's tried and tested iPod menu system. If you're a multimedia enthusiast and don't mind the lack of Wi-Fi, we'd seriously consider getting the Sony NWZ-S544 instead of Apple's nano.

Overall if you are looking for a compact MP3 player which has great video playback and easy to navigate menus and software, then I would recommend taking a look at the Sony Walkman S-Series.

The S Series is an unassuming player that gets almost all of the basics right

The Sony NWZ-S544 doesn't quite impress as much as the NWZ-S639F it succeeds, the NWZ-E443 sounds almost as good while costing less and there are better sounding, better featured players out there. But accept its shortcomings and the S544 is still a credible player.
