There are some, though, who will (not unreasonably) claim that a £250 price tag puts the P5s firmly into ‘hi-fi’ territory. After all, there are some better-sounding alternatives available at this sort of money (see Also Consider panel) – but they’re all leaky, open-backed types that don’t work as well in the outside world. And they’re not anywhere near as pretty as the B&Ws, either. So ultimately the P5s are fit for purpose regardless of that excitable top end. Your iPod will thank you for investing in a pair.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit Like Unlike

For a debut product, Bowers and Wilkins has done a fine job. Retaining the house sound is a credit to the engineering team and the fabulous design touches and obvious build quality strengths make the £250 tag seem, well, fair. Try them for comfort first, but then buy with confidence.

There's no escaping the old maxim of garbage in garbage out, but the Bowers & Wilkins P5 headphones make an iPod sound better than you have any right to expect, and for that they have to be applauded. However, they can only do so much with a substandard input and I can only hope that a set of proper audiophile grade headphones - or even IEMs - will find their way out of Bowers & Wilkins' labs soon enough.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit Like Unlike

The B&W P5 aren't designed to be a reference grade headset for your home recording studio, which some might have expected: they are designed to be portable and for taking on the move, partnered with your iPod or iPhone. They fold flat and you get a bag to keep them in too.
