SANYO Xacti VPC-WH1 Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

A waterproof camcorder that's great for fooling about with on holiday, but most beach fans will be better off with a video-capable waterproof camera.

A rugged, durable video and stills camera that would cope with active shooting very well. It didn't disappoint when tested underwater and operated perfectly afterwards without any leaks. With this in mind, it would be an excellent choice for documenting watersports. However, we can't avoid the fact that the image quality is poor. Too much emphasis is placed on this being a dual camera and we were disappointed with the mediocre 2-megapixel stills capture.

While waterproof housings are available for other small camcorders, they typically cost at least as much as the Sanyo Xacti VPC-WH1 does. The Sanyo Xacti VPC-WH1 is a good choice for use in and around water, including under rain and snow, and for situations where you don't want to risk recording with a more-expensive camera.

Cheap for a fully waterproof camcorder, but poor image quality lets the side down badly.

For many users, this camcorder's waterproof housing and low price will compensate for its average image quality.

On paper, Sanyo looked like it had stolen a march on Panasonic with the Xacti VPC-WH1, as the first consumer-oriented waterproof HD camcorder. But whilst its moisture-repelling capabilities are commendable, video performance in poorly lit underwater conditions isn't so outstanding. Nevertheless, you will still be able to grab many moments of aquatic pleasure, and at under £300 it's incredibly good value. So this may not be the perfect HD video water baby, but at least Sanyo's Xacti VPC-WH1 won't mean you have to dig deep to dive deep.
