The Opus is another solid effort from Philips, its conservative looks, slow start up time and merely adequate video performance notwithstanding. In its favour it produces a very good sound, is extremely easy to use, has a very fine FM radio, decent format support, comes bundled with a pair of earphones that you don't need to immediately replace and doesn't cost the earth. All Philips needs to do now is make a version with a 4in VGA screen and a microSD expansion slot and we’ll be singing its praises.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

A decent but not overwhelmingly impressive effort from Philips. The Opus looks great and is a pleasure to use; it's also temptingly priced. Unfortunately sound quality with the bundled headphones could be better, and that's a bit of a dealbreaker when you're an MP3 player.

The Opus delivers excellent audio, but on all other counts it's slightly lacking. Most of all, it's low on excitement, and Philips really needs to address this if it's serious about staying in the PMP game.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

The audio quality is something that we liked, working well with those better-than-average headphones: it’s rare to find an MP3 player where you are happy to stick with the supplied headphones and we were luckily enough to find a perfect fit with those supplied. Yes, we did find better results with higher quality headphones, but uncharacteristically, we'd recommend giving the bundled ones a go first.
