Netbooks Alive and Well in MSI Country, New Wind U180 Follows Cedar Trail into Town

Posted on Feb 03, 2012 by MG15

Who knew netbooks would prove so resilient? By all means, the growing popularity and falling prices of tablet PCs along with the rollout of Intel's Ultrabook bandwagon could have spelled doom for the netbook form factor. But along comes Cedar Trail and suddenly there's renewed interest in these pint-sized notebooks, at least for one more generation anyway. MSI, one of the driving forces in the netbook category, just unveiled its new Wind U180 for 2012. "The Wind U180, meticulously crafted by MSI for 2012, marks a new zenith in computer technology, offering both performance and esthetically pleasing looks," MSI says. For whatever reason, we envision the "god of war" being bigger than 15.6 inches, but let's not fault MSI for being excited about its new GT685 gaming laptop and calling it such. With a traditional screen size in tow, the GT685 has the chops to be a desktop replacement, and could even be a desktop killer depending on how it's spec'd out. Let's have a look at what it brings to the table.

The new GT780DX gaming laptop from MSI is being billed as "the ultimate weapon in battle," and one look at the spec sheet shows why. It also has a SteelSeries gaming keyboard baked into the chassis. MSI says the keyboard is more rugged than a standard plank, the Windows key has been moved to the right side to prevent accidentally striking it when you really just mean to duck fire, it has larger Ctrl and Alt keys, and there are five backlight schemes ...

MSI Launches Slim 14

MSI Launches Slim 14" X460 and X460DX Notebooks

Posted on Aug 17, 2011 by MG3

Filed in: NotebooksMSI

If there’s one thing I like about computer technology, it’s progress. Late 2010, the best you could get from the 14” sector would have been something like the discontinued Dell XPS L401x. That laptop came with GeForce GT 425M, 4GB RAM, and an i5-460M CPU for a base price of $900. In March, we looked at the ASUS U41JF, which boasted an overclockable i3-380M, 4GB RAM, and the same GT 425M graphics card. Both of those laptops leveraged NVIDIA’s Optimus Technology to give you a balanced platform, but even $800 seems steep compared to AMD’s Llano laptops, which is why we’re seeing upgrades and price cuts everywhere.

MSI's WindPad, introduced at Computex, is now shipping in North America. The Windows 7-powered tablet sports an AMD Z-01 APU rather than the promised NVIDIA Tegra 250 at its unveiling at the end of May. Other specs, however, such as the 32GB solid-state drive, 10-inch, 1280x800 screen and USB and miniHDMI ports are retained.
There is also 4GB of RAM onboard, and support for DirectX 11 content is present. A webcam is also built-in, which works with the software suite to read users' faces for access in lieu of a password.

MSI outs CX480 notebook with 8.5-hour battery, fast boot

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NotebooksMSICX480

MSI swung out a relatively unique addition to its CX series notebooks on Wednesday. The 14-inch CX480 has a particularly strong focus on the battery life not often seen in mainstream portables that gives it up to 8.5 hours on a charge. The PC also brings in MSI's in-house fast charging to power up in half as much time and has an Apple-influenced external battery indicator that shows the charge without needing to boot up.
The startup time itself is also distinct and, according to MSI, takes half as long as other notebooks. A new internal design purportedly helps improve heat dissipation by putting all the hot-running components in the upper left, away from the palm rest.
Performance is dictat...

We know you're going to be shocked -- shocked! -- to hear this, but NVIDIA's gone and refreshed its high-end line of GeForce GTX cards. The GTX 580M takes the place of the GTX 485M, and NVIDIA's bragging that it's the "fastest notebook GPU ever," capable, we're told, of besting the Radeon HD 6970M's tesselation performance by a factor of six.
