The First Wave of Philips HDTVs Release in Europe

Several months ago, Philips unveiled their 2012 HDTV lineup. Today, it was announced that the first wave of HDTVs are beginning to hit the retail market. The company has three series now available, the 4007, 5507, and 6007 series. The downside though is that they are only available in Europe at the moment. The company has yet to release their flagship TVs, but the 6007 series is a close second. It includes four HDMI ports and range in size from 32 to 55 inches, diagonally. Unfortunately the company has yet to announce retail prices or when the TVs will receive a global release.

A triumvirate of television titans -- LG, Sharp and Philips -- are joining forces to create a development kit, defining a common standard for their Smart TV apps. The power play addresses the problem of fragmentation, since developers will only need to make one version of an app for it to work across all three of the 'tubes operating systems. Based on open standards like HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV, developers should get their hands on a beta version by early October, with the finalized version due by the end of the year. Early August Panasonic Corporation, Samsung Electronics, Sony Corporation and X6D Limited (XPAND 3D) announced the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative. Now the group announces that TCL, Sharp, Philips and Toshiba join as well. LG is still absent because of their focus on passive 3D glasses.
