It's Official: Barnes & Noble Rolls Out 8GB Nook Tablet for $199

Barnes & Noble on Tuesday officially introduced a previously rumored 8GB version of its low price Nook Tablet. By cutting internal storage in half from 16GB and reducing the amount of RAM to 512MB, B&N was able to shave $50 off the retail cost and sell the new version for $199, the same exact price as Amazon's competing Kindle Fire tablet, which happens to be the second most popular slate on the planet behind Apple's iPad.

Barnes & Noble has slammed shut the loophole allowing NOOK Tablet owners to install third-party apps, pushing out a new firmware update – v1.4.1 – that closes the door on all but the retailer’s own, approved software. Described as making “minor system enhancements” to the Android-based ereader by B&N itself, the software significantly limits the general usefulness of the NOOK Tablet for those wanting to do more than basic reading and browsing.

Keeping up the tradition of hacked Nooks, XDA-Developers forum contributors have posted a full root for the Nook Tablet. A combination of USB drivers as well as either a batch program or a command line sequence will let users freely install or remove apps on the Android 2.3 slate. The hack, zergRush, doesn't unlock the bootloader and thus won't take completely new firmware like CyanogenMod.

Well, this is definitely a bummer. Barnes & Noble has spent a fair amount of time talking up all of the Nook Tablet's internal advantages over the Kindle Fire, a list that includes 16GB of storage to the Fire's 8GB. That particular spec may not be quite as good as it looks on paper, however. It seems that Barnes & Noble is currently limiting internal storage on the Android slate to 1GB of content not downloaded directly from B&N. Bummer, right? Especially for those expecting to store their multimedia content on the device. It's not all bad, though. Yep, we had a feeling this one was coming. As expected, bookstore mega-chain Barnes & Noble has launched its answer to Amazon's Kindle Fire (and to a lesser extent, Kobo's multimedia Vox slate) -- also as expected, the thing looks an awful lot like its predecessor, the recently discounted Nook Color, right down to the metal bar on the bottom corner. Granted, B&N did already make the leap into the tablet space, when the Nook Color was upgraded earlier this year -- but the Nook Tablet brings more than just a new name, of course.

Barnes & Noble responds to Amazon with Nook iPad app update

Just as Amazon revealed that it will be offering its iPad app Kindle users access to newspapers and magazines, rival Barnes & Noble has done the same with an announcement that periodical access for its iPad Nook app will come "in the coming days".
The app gives users access to 175 magazines and newspapers although, like the updated Kindle app, Nook has also refused to toe the line with Apple's in-app subscription guidelines. It has removed the Nook store link from the app, and is now offering purchases from the browser at www.nooknewsstand.com.
