Security firm Symantec has uncovered a string a cyber attacks targeting the chemical industry, but the intent of the hacks appear to be corporate espionage rather than the actual procurement of chemicals.
Between July and September, hackers sought to collect intellectual property from chemical firms, including design documents, formulas, and manufacturing processes. "The purpose of the attacks appears to be industrial espionage, collecting intellectual property for competitive advantage," according to Symantec, which nicknamed the attack campaign Nitro.
