A team of engineers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has concocted a way to build photovoltaic polarizers directly into LCD displays. This would allow the LCD screen itself to collect energy from sunlight, artificial light, and even the display's own backlight and convert it into energy. The researchers say that current LCDs are inefficient, and an LCD's backlight can consume as much as 80 or 90% of a device's power. »read more
