Vizio M421VT - Nice Features but Quality is Lacking

Created by wizbang_fl on Jul 14, 2013

Ownership period: more than 1 year.
I have had a 37" Vizio LCD for almost 6 years and it has been a wonderful unit. With that history i obtained a Vizio M421VT which I had for almost 2 years. The unit had nice sound and a bluetooth remote control which allowed you to adjust the volume or channel without needing a line of sight to the unit. Picture quality was quite good and controls are very "set it and forget it" The bad.... VIA apps... There is a mention that you can play content from a USB (haven't found anything that would play from the USB connection) Also, was supposed to work with DLNA media storage, again couldn't ever get it to work. (FYI, just bough a different TV and DLNA worked without any challenge or question) VIA's problems were so great that I had disconnected the TV from the network because at random times the apps would decide to update and during the update process the TV screen would go dark and you just had to wait for the process to complete (could be a few minutes to almost an hour). Unfortunately, it appears to be what was the end to our unit. A roommate was watching TV and suddenly the Vizio logo started blinking and she thought something was wrong with the TV, so she unplugged it, not realizing that she was interrupting a firmware upgrade. So now the unit will only lash the Vizio words on the front of the unit and when the Logo is displayed on the screen for about 5 seconds then the unit shuts off and after a few minutes the Vizio words start to flash again and again. Have tried to contact Vizio who will only say "it's out of warranty" Before this unit hit the skids we also bought a 22 inch tv monitor that has similarly poor quality controls (but it was only $120) and we gave it to our pre-teen niece for her room. Sorry to say, but Vizio isn't the brand it started out as. FYI, the unit has been plugged into a UPS with battery backup from day 1 so prevent power spikes or brown outs.
