Audio jack not working

This happened 2 or 3 weeks after I got the laptop. The 3.5mm audio jack just stopped working although the mic jack is fine. I tried reinstalling a ton of drivers but the speakers just won't play. I've read somewhere that this is a common problem in some of the Asus laptops but it didn't seem to have a solution.
So, does anyone know something helpful? I really want to play some music NOT through the built-in speakers.

Display mode:
- Plug in your headphones
- Go to Control Panel > Sound
- See if there are any connected devices
If you see more than one device:
- Make sure to check your headphones as primary (Default). You can do that by clicking on the headphones (might be displayed as Speakers) and then on the bottom Set Default. In case you want to configure and test the sound output, before setting default device, click configure and then click Test.
If no devices are shown:
- Update X59GL audio drivers - http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=X59GL&p=3&s=132 (select OS and download the latest audio drivers)
- Try the procedure above
Hope that helps. In case it turns out to be hardware fault, you should claim your warranty.
A friend told me that it is possible to force the mic jack to be acting like an audio one. He said this is done through some older version of Realtek. Is this possible?
