Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi's Japan Display merger begins production

Japan Display, the merger between Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi's small and medium-sized touchscreen LCD manufacturing divisions, began operations on April 1st. The relationship between the three companies was announced in August last year, before being formalized in November. Each of the manufacturers has a 10 percent stake in the new firm, with the remaining 70 percent held by the largely government-funded Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). Including the 200 billion yen (around $2.4 billion) investment by INCJ, Japan Display currently holds 230 billion yen (just over $2.8 billion) in capital.

Hitachi's line of domestically produced Wooo TVs is coming to an end, now that the manufacturer has confirmed plans to close a major plant in central Japan. In an announcement issued today, Hitachi said it will shutter its factory in Gifu, where some 100,000 LCD and plasma TVs are produced each month. Citing industry-wide price competition as the deciding factor, the company went on to clarify that the facility will shut down by September of this year, and that it will instead be used to manufacture projectors and chips. Hitachi and many of the other LCD TV firms in the tech world are having a hard time making the money the segment once turned. The problem is that the purchase of TVs is sagging, and the industry is still recovering in the wake of the price fixing fines that totaled hundreds of millions of dollars. Hitachi has announced today that it will be moving its LCD TV production outside of Japan.

Hitachi unveiled today their latest interactive projector, the BZ-1. This device is designed specifically for corporate environments. The specifications are limited, but we do know it has 2500 ANSI lumens and a WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution. This device features 2600 ANSI lumens, a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and XGA (1024 x 768) resolution. The main feature with this device is its Intelligent Eco technology. This feature is able to detect the brightness in the room and adjust the projector’s brightness accordingly. This will help prolong the lamp life and help cut down power consumption. Japanese technology company Hitachi has followed in the footsteps of rival Seagate with the announcement that it's squeezed an entire terabyte of storage onto a single 3.5-inch hard drive platter.
The new disks are targeted at desktop PCs and storage-based TVs and digital video recorders, and feature only a single 1TB platter in order to reduce power consumption and reduce the chances of the drives failing.

Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba have agreed to merge their small and medium-size display businesses into a joint venture, that will have a government-backed investment company, Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, as the largest shareholder.
The move comes as Japan tries to protect its companies from the rising Yen and competition from other Asian players.

Hitachi announced recently the release of their latest medium-sized projector, the CP-X2514WN. This projector is designed for boardrooms and classroom and can display 2700 ANSI lumens, a native XGA (1024 x 768) resolution, and a 3000:1 contrast ratio. One of the main features with this model though is that it has wireless capabilities. This means that the projector can be mounted onto the ceiling and the user won’t have to run cables in order to connect it to a laptop or PC.
