I think the design is a bit lacking, but I generally like the idea. I just wish it did more. I have to think the next iteration of this device will be light years better than this first one; And that's why, I think I'll be waiting 'til next year for something like this.

Im not sure how I could integrate this into my daily life at this price point. I already have a 32gb ipod touch so I get to take my media (pics vids and music) with me. If I want to watch my videos on a bigger screen its a $30 purchase for a video out cable. and I can read ebooks on my ipod or my blackberry which when im done I can slip in my pocket. My mobile browsing experience only consist of looking things up for reference and when I want to "experience the web" I use my computer which supports flash, silverlight, java, and all that html has to offer. I'm not hooked on the tablet form factor as a whole but i'm sure someone can justify having this device in their life.
Personally, I don't think it will have any succes, it's just a large iPhone, with NO multitasking..... and for a tablet/notebook like gadget it a no no!
Well if you are only going to use it instead of your newspaper and to watch movies on it. Then why not?! It does make sense for the price.... Does't it?
Apple is pushing this as a tablet and a eBook but neither describes it accurately. What I look for in a tablet is a full OS, not a phone OS. Once they put OSX on it, I'll consider buying it.
It's like an iPhone that's too big to fit in your pocket... or a netbook with rudimentary capabilities...
I seriously don't know what apple was thinking or who Jobs expected it to appeal to. It's a threat to the Kindle, but ebook readers are simply not that big of a market and another $500+ piece of equipment is the last thing that segment needs for expanding.
I agree that a full OS would have made all the difference in capability, especially since windows-powered netbooks have quite a few more "apps" available than the appstore does. It seems like this whole project was half-baked and served to the public too soon...
What I don't get is how people bash something they have never seen or touched yet...wait until it comes out, use it for more than 5 minutes, then make your comments.
Can't wait to try this product out at the stores, seems like a cool product but im a little skeptical....hopefully its not just an oversized iPhone.

GROAN!!! What is their deal with Adobe?!?!?! Why can't they add a Flash plugin? So many websites use Flash and it ruins the browsing experience when you have these HUGE chunks of no content right in the middle of the page. Just leaves the door open for Google to stomp them!
As far as I can tell, the iPad is NOT supposed to be, nor was it designed to be, a computer like our current way of thinking. On our networks at home, we have desktops, notebooks, gaming systems, networked hard drives, even smart-phones. What we need (and this is where iPad comes in) is a device that is somewhere between our smart-phones and our notebooks- we need a bigger screen than a smart-phone, but true portability (and smaller footprint) than our notebooks. I mean, let face it, even with a netbook, how often are you gonna take it with you to the kitchen to make a snack while reading your favorite tech blog? Or even, heaven forbid, take it the bathroom with you to read? The iPad is small enough to that kind of stuff with, yet big enough and powerful enough for you to not feel like you only have your cell phone with you. Plus, with its networking abilities, you can play music off of your network, access and edit documents, or even READ A BOOK (remember the premise of this device was an e-reader).
This is perfect for me and ill tell you why. I am constantly on the road and it all comes down to this: i want instant on internet and at 30 bucks a month they cant go wrong. This is perfect for me (as well as my father). I am always on the go and i just want to log on check my email, check a few sites and log off. It will not replace my desktop, but i don't generally need my desktop or my netbook for that matter! When this comes out good buy asus n10j hello ipad.
Could someone please please force apple to change this things name.
If the multilingual text recognition software works fine it will be very good office assistant. Of course that functionality of news and book reader is very common nowadays.
For me the key is in long lasting battery and small consumption, text recognition input, GPS, optimal form factor, good free software pack and price at 400$ or lower
I would like something like that with some portable CAD/GIS application and office software package.
Color electron paper (even 255 colors) and touch screen with minimum energy consumption will be optimal for my job.
I'm not going to judge it until i can have time to use it and explore its true potential!
I think Apple could have done much better than just making a bigger I-phone. I hope the next versions are much better. Although I do like the way this gets plugged to the keyboard :)
I agree with a lot of people commenting here. It really appears as if the iPad is just a gigantic iphone...well, more like an ipod touch since it's not a phone. I'm sure the utility of it will be expanded because the device itself is bigger, but aside from being just a casual internet-able "computer" that would be nice to have, it doesn't appear to add anything revolutionary. Personally, I was hoping that Apple would come out with a true tablet: an ipad sized computer running OS X that would have the same functionality as all their other computer but would bring multitouch gestures and touch screens to the next level. Maybe that's still in the plans...
