Pirate Bay links blocked from Windows Live Messenger due to 'malicious' content

We learned yesterday that Microsoft had started blocking links to The Pirate Bay in Windows Live Messanger, and now Microsoft has helped to clarify why those messages are being blocked. A spokesperson for Microsoft told us that "we block instant messages if they contain malicious or spam URLs based on intelligence algorithms, third-party sources, and/or user complaints. Pirate Bay URLs were flagged by one or more of these and were consequently blocked." It doesn't sound like Microsoft is specifically targeting piracy-related sites with this block, though we can't say exactly how Microsoft's "third-party sources" or "intelligence algorithms" view a site like The Pirate Bay.
