Recovering data from a HDD with lots of bad sectors

Posted by Reaper on Jul 04, 2011

Hello, recently I've replaced my notebook hard drive due to lots of bad sectors in one of the partitions. Acronis was able to clone my C: drive, so I've got recover data from my D: drive. So how do I do that? I've tried the windows copy, tera copy and few other copying apps and stiil the whole process ends when a bad file is found. Any way to skip those or copy them?

Level 9 There is a software called Ddrescue it is the best I`ve used to recover data from burnt HDDs(by that i mean with bad sectors). There is a live CD version...you can read all about it here http://www.forensicswiki.org/wiki/Ddrescue
There are also instructions how to install it on Ubuntu and other linux based systems if you have access to one. You can also find information about the usage in the Ubuntu forums:

Keep us informed about your progress and good luck!

Level 2 Try TestDisk, as I see your hard is powered and both the BIOS and Windows are able to detect the drive, so the program should do the work :)

Level 9 Write if you tried TestDisk, because I`m not a big fan of HDD recovery tools running under Windows...they tend to not work :D so I`m kinda interested if any of them works...the ones I`ve tried didn`t
