Why would a tablet need quad-core processor?

Just wondering, why would a device with sort of basic functionality would need a quad-core processors and 2GBs of RAM (a quad-core Lenovo tablet is on the way)? Are there any apps that can take advantage of that power? Or is it just because more is more and all the Android tablet makers are now trying...

No matter brand and OS, which one is the winner in the toughest category - battery life? That's of course with factory installed battery.

I'm actually interested in recent Android running smartphones between 3.5 and 4 inch, but also very curious which one is having the best battery....
