Megaupload Founder Denied Bail Over Flight Risk
Like UnlikeA New Zealand judge on Wednesday ordered the founder of the lucrative offshore file transfer site Megaupload.com be held in custody for another month while awaiting possible extradition to the U.S. on charges of racketeering, copyright infringement, and money laundering.
Kim Dotcom, a 38 year-old German national also known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor, was denied bail by Judge David McNaughton, who said the accused Internet pirate posed a "significant" flight risk, Reuters reported. Dotcom will remain in custody until Feb. 22, when he faces an extradition hearing.

The LG Spectrum is now available from Verizon Wireless for about $200 with a new two-year contract and the latest 4G LTE smartphone packs quite the punch with a beautiful HD screen.
The device isn’t dramatically different from the LG Nitro we saw earlier but the Spectrum is for Verizon Wireless and it will be a 4G LTE handset. We can also look forward to a 4.5 True HD IPS display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera on the rear, 1.3 megapixel camera and all the other connectivity goodies you’d expect from a smartphone like this.
While we’ve seen multiple phones with a 720p screen, the True HD IPS display is quite a sight to behold and I found LG’s HD screens to be some of the best...

Toshiba is taking a bit of a risk here with the bold statement that they are getting ready to unveil the thinnest and the lightest 10.1-inch tablet at CES next week especially since their latest effort, the Android-powered Thrive wasn’t exactly on the thin or light side.
As far as specs go there isn’t anything to go along with this statement. Just the other day a benchmark showed a quad-core Toshiba tablet which could very well be the one that they are touting as the thinnest and lightest. The benchmark results were similar to what has been seen with the Asus Transformer Prime, which is the first quad-core tablet to hit the market.

Apple’s iPhone 4S is set to launch in China and 21 more markets on January 13th. The popular smartphone was previously rumored to be scheduled for release in the region on January 23rd, but Apple announced on Tuesday that the launch of its latest smartphone will occur 10 days sooner. “Customer response to our products in China has been off the charts,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever.” China is seen as a key growth market for Apple’s mobile devices as well as its MacBook line of notebook computers. AOC Announces USB-Powered Full-HD Monitor

Back in june last year the first news-releases where spotted on this already, but it seems to finalize, AOC announced the USB-powered e2251wu monitor. This 21.5-inch monitor consumes so little power, that it draws it from a USB port. Even with so little resources, the monitor has a specs sheet: 1920 x 1080 pixels native resolution, 1000:1 static contrast ratio (dynamic 20,000,000:1), 250 cd/m2; brightness, and 5 ms response time. The monitor can either by attached to its base, or incline on its arm.

Motorola recently posted a message in its XOOM owners forums alerting customers that the company is working on a confidential project for the XOOM. Any owner of the Wi-Fi-only “Google Experience Device” version of the XOOM can choose to participate. What remains unknown, however, is what the “confidential project” exactly is. We doubt Motorola would spend too much time adding new features or making too many tweaks to the tablet now that a new model has launched, so we think it’s more likely that the company is working on a test version of Ice Cream Sandwich. Sony Ericsson has already jumped ahead of the rest of the Android manufacturer pack by committing itself to releasing Android 4.0 on a slew of smartphones and even going so far as to to release "preview ROMs" for several of them. On the tablet side, Sony looks like it's being equally aggressive. New Kindle Fire root dodges Amazon's 6.2.1 update roadblocks

Amazon's attempts to close down root access on the Kindle Fire were skipped again after a new root app was published on Friday. The new version from Android Police uses a different approach altogether and is more universal. To date, it should patch not just the current Kindle Firs code but every version before it.
Implementing it requires a pair of apps and using Google's ADB to crack it.
The update, as usual, carries typical risks. It voids the warranty as long as it's active, and could potentially cause problems. Amazon will probably try to patch the exploit that allowed the root and, unlike with other Android tablets, can force the updates to come without permission.

A Chinese web site is showing leaked photographs of the Huawei MediaPad running Android 4.0.1. While no definitive word has come out of Huawei yet, it certainly does indicate that the manufacturer plans on updating the tablet to Ice Cream Sandwich from the Android 3.2 build of the OS that was installed for the launch of the device. After the update, the tablet will have the ability to make voice calls and one of the leaked spyshots shows the dialer on the tablet.

Acer will continue to launch new tablets in 2012 despite slow sales of the company’s current tablet models. Commenting on rumors that Acer might slow its tablet efforts in 2012 or even exit the emerging market completely, company founder Stan Shih stated that Acer would not be giving up on tablets just yet. Just recently, Samsung updated us on its Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update schedule and which devices are getting it and to our great disappointment the Samsung Galaxy S and the 7-inch original Galaxy Tab are not in there. The latest models of the company are, of course, getting the update: the Samsung Galaxy S II, S II LTE, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. But that’s little consolation for those owning Samsung’s 2010 flagship or Samsung’s first tablet.

Don't say we didn't tell you so: Hasbro sued Asus over the name of its Transformer Prime tablet last week, in a federal district court. The toymaker is no doubt worried that the name could be confused with that of its Transformers franchise, not to mention Optimus Prime, the lead protagonist of the animation and film series... though we're not quite sure how a robot that transforms into a semi truck could be confused with a tablet and detachable keyboard.
