Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 1 available now

Posted on Jun 11, 2012 by MG1

It has only been a few short weeks since Ubuntu 12.04 was released back in April, along side the LTS support. While I’m sure it still feels new to many we already have the next version. Development never stops in the Linux world and today they’ve made their next version, Ubuntu 12.10 alpha 1 available for download.
Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal is scheduled to launch in October, but you can get in on the few new features that are ready to go right now by downloading the alpha 1 build today. It’s been less than two months since the last stable version was released so not a whole lot has changed, but there are some notable differences. For starters Linux Kernel 3.4 has been incorporated into 12...

Ubuntu coming to smartphones as early as next year

Ubuntu coming to smartphones as early as next year

Posted on Jun 05, 2012 by MG1

The fine folks over at Canonical have been hard at work on a mobile version of the popular Ubuntu Linux distro, and have announced that the final build will be making its way to smartphones later this year or early next year. Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth would not provide a specific date to PC World, instead indicating that announcements would likely be coming later this year.
Ubuntu for smartphones won’t follow the typical Ubuntu distribution channels, meaning it won’t be made readily available to anyone who so chooses to download it. Instead, the final build of Ubuntu will be made available to manufacturers who can then choose to offer the Ubuntu experience on their smartphones to r...

Ubuntu releases 12.04 Precise Pangolin LTS Linux

Ubuntu releases 12.04 Precise Pangolin LTS Linux

Posted on Apr 30, 2012 by MG1

Popular Linux distribution Ubuntu announced the immediate availability of their latest release yesterday, bringing with it Unity and its file searching tool HUD to enterprise users as part of the long-term support release which distribution backer Canonical will offer security updates for until 2017.
"There's a significant set of aesthetic changes for users, and ultimately beauty is a feature," Steve George, head of communications at Canonical, told ZDNet. "Users enjoy their environments more when they look beautiful and modern." That said, it's also true that Unity continues to seriously divide loyal followers and this latest release is unlikely to be any different despite some major improv...

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin hits the web, with HUD in tow

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin hits the web, with HUD in tow

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

It's here! Precise Pangolin or, as it's officially known, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Canonical's latest is now available in its final(ish) form and ready for you to download, burn and install. While LTS (Long Term Support) releases are generally more conservative in their application of new features, Pangolin does include some rather notable tweaks. The most immediately noticeable will be the new log in screen which, while largely the same, does have the slick new trick of changing wall papers to match the selected user. A more subtle change is revealed once you've logged on and press alt -- HUD. The new search-based menu system is quite a departure from traditional interaction models, and one that w...

Ubuntu coming soon to multi-core Android devices

Ubuntu coming soon to multi-core Android devices

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

Canonical announced on Tuesday that the popular open-source Ubuntu operating system will soon be coming to multi-core Android devices. Users will be able use Android on their smartphones and Ubuntu as a desktop once the device is docked with a keyboard and monitor. Both operating systems will run simultaneously on the same device and have the ability to share contacts, messages and other common services. “The phone experience is pure Android – it’s a normal Android phone,” Canonical stated. “When the device is connected to a computer screen, however, it launches a full Ubuntu desktop on the computer display. It’s exactly the same desktop used by millions of enterprise and home users on their...

Ubuntu 12.04 to replace traditional menus with new HUD

Ubuntu 12.04 to replace traditional menus with new HUD

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Ubuntu is set to replace the traditional menu system with a head-up display (HUD), enabling users to type or speak commands in its upcoming April 2012 long term support (LTS) release of the popular Linux distribution. Rather than using the traditional drop down menu, the Ubuntu HUD uses a transparent text box in which you can type or speak what you want to do to perform actions or tasks.
Canonical founder and former CEO Mark Shuttleworth announced the new feature on his blog. "The core idea [of HUD] is to get to a world where people can direct an application to do what they want," he said. "Having stated your intent, the application leads you down a simple journey to get that done."

Ubuntu Looks To Replace Traditional Menus With New

Ubuntu Looks To Replace Traditional Menus With New "HUD" Interface

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

Windows 8 isn't the only upcoming operating system that's kicking traditional GUI models to the curb. Ubuntu Linux is getting in on the paradigm-breaking action with the introduction of "The HUD" (yes, that means Heads-Up Display) in the next version of Ubuntu. No, Ubuntu's HUD has nothing to do with tracking ammo or teammates; instead, it's a new "Vocabulary UI" that aims to crush, kill and eventually replace the standard file menus we've used for over 30 years.

Ubuntu May Be Coming to a TV Near You

Ubuntu May Be Coming to a TV Near You

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

According to Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth, there are a few developers who want to develop such a platform and have met in a chat to nail down some of the priorities of a Ubuntu-TV project.
There are no surprises in the first batch of ideas or initial mockups that may blow your socks off. Shuttleworth noted that it will have to be a 10-foot interface for watching media with remote control support, cloud and/or server storage, physical media playback, Ubuntu One accounts, installable image, easy configuration, integration with other Ubuntu devices, portable devices control, as well as media sharing and the option for media purchases.

Final Ubuntu 11.10 spiffs up Unity, adds ARM server support

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Ubuntu 11.10 ("Oneiric Ocelot") was released, featuring makeovers for its Unity desktop and Ubuntu Software Center, plus a switch to the Thunderbird email client and a new backup tool called Deja Dup. On the server side, Ubuntu 11.10 adds ARM support, as well as a new "Juju" cloud management framework, and the integration of OpenStack within Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure.

Most of the desktop and UI changes to the Ubuntu 11.10 ("Oneiric Ocelot") Linux distribution were revealed in the alpha and beta releases, the latter coming in September. However, a few new wrinkles have popped up, and there's also plenty of server news, including new cloud features and the first support for ARM-based server...

Acer and ASUS opt into Tizen; HTC ponders say sources

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG15

Tizen, the platform that gobbled up MeeGo, may only be a few days old but already it’s reportedly gaining support from new companies including ASUS and Acer. The firms are each apparently set to add Tizen development to their engineer’s workload, DigiTimes‘ sources claim, with HTC said to be “currently evaluating its decision.” The shift in OS focus will mean that ASUS and Acer’s existing MeeGo device plans are put on ice, it’s suggested.

Intel kills MeeGo in favor of Tizen

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG1

Intel announced on Wednesday that it will be shifting its efforts from MeeGo to the new “Tizen” mobile operating system recently announced by The Linux Foundation. The move is in line with reports from early September that suggested Intel would move on due to a lack of consumer enthusiasm surrounding the OS. Nokia launched the MeeGo-powered N9 this month but also announced in June that it was ditching the platform in favor of Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS. “We believe the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps, and we are firmly convinced that our investment needs to shift toward HTML5,” Intel said in a blog post, explaining why it did not...

Microsoft renews alliance with SUSE, throws $100 million in pocket change at Linux

Microsoft renews alliance with SUSE, throws $100 million in pocket change at Linux

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft and Linux haven't always had the friendliest of rapports but, a few years back, the folks at Redmond decided to cozy up to Novell and the enterprise-focused distro SUSE. The German arm of the company even wished Tux a happy 20th birthday last week, in an attempt to further thaw their notoriously chilly relationship. Now the Windows crew have decided to renew their partnership with SUSE and have committed to purchasing $100 million in technical support for Microsoft Enterprise customers who also happen to be running Linux boxes as part of their operations. It's not about to stop claiming that the open source OS violates several of its patents, but at least they've learned to get alo...
