Lenovo IdeaPad A1 quietly goes on sale in US

Lenovo has quietly begun taking sales for its new IdeaPad Tablet A1. The company had announced the entry-level device back in early September with similar lack of fanfare. The seven-inch device, which runs Android 2.3, is priced from $199 to $249, depending on capacity.
The IdeaPad A1 runs on a low-cost, 1GHz TI OMAP 3622 ARM Cortex-A8 processor, a front two-megapixel camera, and a rear five-megapixel camera. The base built-in storage is as little as 2GB, with an optional 16GB version. Lenovo claims the battery runs for up to five hours, or up to seven hours when just browsing.

Ex-Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci joins Lenovo as a consultant

We haven't heard much from outspoken former Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci since he left the company back in March of this year, but it looks like he's now ready to get back into the PC business in a slightly different role. Lenovo confirmed today that Lanci is joining the company as a consultant to "help develop and accelerate Lenovo's worldwide consumer business." Initially, those efforts will be mostly focused on Lenovo's integration of German PC manufacturer Medion, which it acquired in June for $907 million, but it sounds like this is more than just a short-term gig -- he does get to stay in Italy, though. Lenovo IdeaPad A1 is a 7-inch Android tablet that will be available for $199

Lenovo unveiled what we think is a mass-market tablet (if there is such a thing) at this year’s IFA in Berlin, Germany. The IdeaPad A1 comes with a 7-inch 1024×600 pixels touchscreen, single-core processor, 3-megapixel camera on the back, front-facing camera for video calls, Wi-Fi connectivity (no 3G), while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show. In other words, we’re talking about a device that’s pretty much the same as the Samsung Galaxy Tab, specs wise.
The good news is the price – Lenovo’s baby will be available starting from $199 for the 8GB version. 16 and 32 GB models, which will be available in the U.S., will retail for $249 and $299, respectively. Hopefully European prices won...

This week the folks at Lenovo are revealing a handful of devices for those that love their computers to fly away at a gust of wind – first of all there’s the “spectacularly slim” U300s Ultrabook, a luxury accessory as Lenovo puts it, powered by 2nd generation Intel® CoreTM i7 processor with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 and rolling in at just 0.6 inches (14.9mm) thick. During its first-quarter earnings call yesterday Lenovo confirmed plans to develop thin and light laptops that fit Intel's definition of 'Ultrabooks'. Responding to an analyst's question, Chief Operating Officer Rory Read said Lenovo will invest in innovation to be a leader in this space, but he doesn't expect the computers to hit mainstream prices until 2012.

This isn't a case where an FCC appearance offers our first hint of an imminent release, but those holding out for Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet instead of the company's more consumer-minded IdeaPad K1 can at least rest assured that things are apparently still on track. Lenovo Looks After SMBs with New LS Series Monitor Line and ThinkCentre Edge Desktops

Lenovo has come out with a new line of monitors dubbed the LS Series. With these new displays, Lenovo intends to give small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) features "crafted to their unique needs," such as bright images and touch-enabled navigational control. Ghosting issues haunt Lenovo ThinkPad X220

Some Lenovo customers are concerned about ghosting on LCD screens in the ThinkPad X220 laptop, in which images temporarily remain fixed on screens, but the company tried to allay fears by saying that images dissipate in a short time and do not damage panels.
The ghosting phenomena -- commonly called image persistence -- are common to LCDs and do not cause images to burn into displays, said Ray Gorman, a Lenovo spokesman, in an email. But some customers have raised concerns, saying the image persistence was prominent, and the issue was not as seemingly normal as projected by Lenovo.

We knew Lenovo will ask a premium for its ThinkPad-branded tablet; nevertheless we were surprised when they announced the price – $479 will get you the basic model, which comes with Wi-Fi only connectivity, 16GB of built-in storage and no digitizer pen. To get that stylus, you’ll have to add another $30 bucks, which drives your total bill to $509. What’s more, presuming you need more space, the 32 gig version will get $589 out of your pocket (digital pen included). Needless to say, a separate keyboard is not part of the deal and it could be yours for an additional $99.
