Acer Iconia Tab A510 with Tegra 3, Android 4.0 arriving in the US and Canada for $450

The curious thing about the Acer Iconia Tab A510 is that it's been out in the open for months -- we've even handled it -- but for whatever reason, Acer's never publicly acknowledged it as the successor to last year's A500. When we got hands-on at CES, for example, it wasn't at Acer's suite, but NVIDIA's booth (this is Acer's first Tegra 3 tablet, don'tcha know). Well, the company's finally ready to come out and say, "Yes, we made this thing." The A510 is up for pre-order today in the US and Canada, with a price of $450. Though you can get it in black or white, it's available in one 32GB configuration for now. To recap, this is a quad-core slate with 1GB of RAM, a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) displ...

Does Apple's New iPad Really Have a Heat Issue?

Apple CEO Tim Cook talked a lot about the post-PC era when introducing the new iPad tablet, but if reports are true that the device tops 100F in some situations, and you're male, you may want to steer clear of resting it on your lap, lest you fry your little swimmers and we start talking about the post-human race era. Or not. Conflicting reports abound on just how hot the new iPad gets.
Consumer Reports kicked things off by claiming it recorded temperatures as high as 116 degrees Fahrenheit on the front and rear of the new iPad while playing Infinity Blade II for 45 minutes. Ambient room temperature was a controlled 72 degrees, well below Apple's upper threshold recommendation of 95 degrees.

With the world of apps no longer in its early days, we are starting to see the emergence of a lot more services that give developers more sophisticated ways of interacting with users, and monetizing what they create. One of the more popular has been the rise of real-time messaging within apps; and today, one player in that space, PubNub, has picked up $4.5 million in funding to expand that line of business even further.
The Series A round was led by mobile-specialist VC Relay Ventures, itself just launched today as the rebranded, $150-million fund formerly known as ATP Capital (the firm that runs JLA Ventures, Clairmont Capital, and BlackBerry Partners Fund. There was also participation from...

Windows 8 PCs and tablets set to launch in October

Posted on Mar 21, 2012 by MG1

Early rumors suggested that devices running Microsoft’s next-generation Windows 8 operating system might launch as soon as this summer, but a new report places the platform’s public release in the fourth quarter. Citing multiple unnamed sources, Bloomberg on Tuesday reported that Microsoft will complete work on Windows 8 this summer, and the first wave of PCs and tablets powered by the new OS will launch in October. Intel x86 and ARM-based devices will both become available at the same time, and Microsoft will reportedly announce its launch plans to industry partners during an event in April. BGR recently reviewed Microsoft’s Windows 8 Consumer Preview, which was unveiled during a press conf...

WhatsTrending found Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak waiting in line for his new iPad at the Century City Mall in Los Angeles. “My wife was the first [in line], I was the second,” said Woz. “We came at about noon. We’re used to Northern California where the stores lines start early.” Of course the co-founder could simply receive the tablet directly from Apple, however Wozniak believes waiting in line has become somewhat of a ritual. “It’s not something that I have to do. Nobody needs to wait in line. You can pre-order… But I’d rather be there genuine like the real people. I want to be one of the people lined up and wait all night. Apple’s just that important to so many of us. You don’t live fo...

UK readers have one more thing to lord over their colonial cousins. Starting today, Archos has made available the long promised Archos 80 G9 Turbo in its full 1.5 GHz glory. Positioned as relative bargains in the Android tablet space, the updated slate can be bought from the UK Archos Store for £199.98 or £239.99, in 8 GB and 16 GB models, respectively. The updated line is shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich on board, so no firmware updates when you open the box.
As a refresher, we've been reporting on Archos G9 line for quite a while. Originally announced as the fastest Android tablets in the world, they haven't until now hit their top speeds on all models. With a TI OMAP 4460 tuned to 1.2 GH...

Sony appears to have a new device coming down the pipe, appearing as V150 on NenaMark 2 tests. The tablet will be powered by the quad-core Tegra 3 chip, which explains the close to 60fps results in the graphics benchmark test. The submitter is listed as S1, which is also the codename of the first Sony Android tablet, so the V150 is likely a souped-up successor.

Lenovo will be 'first to market' with a Windows 8 tablet, says source

Posted on Mar 16, 2012 by MG3

Michael Dell said that he would offer an enterprise tablet "on the exact day" that Windows 8 ships to customers, but his company may have some competition right out of the gate: We've learned that Lenovo is internally planning to be the very first manufacturer to release a Windows 8 tablet, and that the company believes that October is when the operating system will ship. Our source wouldn't provide any details on the slate, save that it will use an Intel chip, but we already saw one possible machine at CES: the 13.3-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, pictured above, with an attached keyboard on a 360-degree hinge that lets you flip the machine into a laptop configuration.
