Samsung releases list of U.S. smartphones, tablets to get Android 4.0 ICS upgrades

Samsung has posted a list of the smartphones and tablets available in the U.S. that it plans to upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at some point this year. Most of the phones on the list have already been promised upgrades to Android 4.0 by their carriers, but it never hurts to have further confirmation from the manufacturer. Still missing from the upgrade list? Any variant of the original Galaxy S, though, that's not entirely unexpected.

Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II getting Android 4.0 update

After reaching overseas versions of the Samsung Galaxy S II, the official Android 4.0 update is now reaching US versions of the unlocked device. The 216.6MB over-the-air update is gradually being released to handsets, though users can go and check for its availability by going into the Settings menu.
Like in the last update for the overseas handsets, TouchWiz is retained and the Android 4.0 UI is relatively invisible. Users will get Face Unlock, however, and support for newer apps including Chrome for Android and other, less visible upgrades.

Sony starting Xperia Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade

Sony has officially announced that it will start its Android 4.0 upgrade for the 2011 line of Xperia smartphones today. Initially, this update is for Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V, and Xperia ray owners located in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Norway. The software rollout will expand to other global markets over the next 4 to 6 weeks.
The Ice Cream Sandwich update is not being conducted over the air, therefore, you will need to tether your device to a Mac or PC. Those with eligible handsets can head on over to http://www.sonymobile.com/update and follow the instructions to perform the upgrade.

Droid RAZR soak test suddenly shifts to ICS test?

We reported last week that the Droid RAZR soak test was not going to include Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich. Today, the story got more complicated. A tipster speaking to Droid-Life suggested that ICS was inserted at a late date into the soak test. Apparently, the admin of the Motorola soak test forum said the following:

Best Buy says ICS for the RAZR delayed, Rezound still on for Friday

Droid-Life got ahold of an internal employee memo Best Buy sent out yesterday, updating employees on the status of Ice Cream Sandwich updates for some of Verizon’s most popular phones. First, Best Buy told employees what we already reported to you – that the updates headed to the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX aren’t going to be ICS, they will be bug fixes.
We’re not sure that translates as ICS being “delayed”; there was never anything but speculation that today’s soak test for RAZR devices would be Android 4.0, so Best Buy may have simply jumped the gun with their previous announcement.

Nexus S 4G ICS update starts rolling out

A few weeks ago we told you Android 4.0 was coming to the Nexus S 4G soon, then just a few days ago we saw a leaked update based on Android 4.0.4. Sprint just let us know that the update is officially rolling out, starting now. The update brings a number of new enhancements from Ice Cream Sandwich, including Android Beam, a new camera interface with panorama mode and the new UI enhancements in Android 4.0 that we've come to love. Sprint's email says that the update will be automatically downloaded to the user's phone when it is available, so keep an eye out for a prompt to apply. The latest comScore numbers have hit the street; quick, all you fanbois need to go sharpen your pitchforks for the ensuing debate! Are they gone? Ok, let’s take a sober look at the numbers before they get back!
In some sense comScore is just reporting more of the same – Android and iOS grew their share of the smartphone market, while Microsoft and RIM continue to shed market share. This quarter’s numbers are punctuated by the fact that Android has now eclipsed the 50% barrier for all smartphones owned in the U.S.

A functional Android Ice Cream Sandwich build for the one and only Samsung Galaxy Note has leaked on the Internets, and it even comes as a trendy one-click installer Odin file.
Don't expect the Premium Suite with this leak, just Android 4.0 covered in a layer of TouchWiz, but it should be good to play around with until the official thing hits this quarter. Your internal memory gets wiped during install, so make sure you move the stuff out temporarily while updating.

LG Optimus S to resume Gingerbread update on April 4th

Back last September, Sprint started rolling out the Gingerbread update for the LG Optimus S. But the update had to be halted when owners of the device started having some issues. Some owners were having problems recharging their phone or connecting to data. Other problems included the failure of predictive text to appear while typing on the virtual QWERTY, an incorrect message would appear stating that the microSD card is unmounted, and when connected to a PC, the device was unrecognized by Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7

Google released its Android 4.0.4 updates for the GSM Nexus S just a couple of days ago, but for users with Sprint's version of the phone it's been a long wait for Ice Cream Sandwich. Well, that didn't take long. Sprint may not have opened its own icebox just yet, but thanks to a BriefMobile source, Nexus S 4G owners can snag themselves Ice Cream Sandwich anyway. While there have been previous efforts, BriefMobile says the leak contains the full, official ICS update, which will be delivered to handsets OTA shortly. Samsung Galaxy S II on Three gets Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung Galaxy S II owners who are signed up to Three can now update their phones to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The network provider has made the new operating system available via Samsung Kies.
Samsung had previously announced that the software update would start to roll out to its devices from yesterday, 19 March, and it has remained true to its word. Three is the first network to announce its availability in the UK, however.
Previously, Samsung had released a statement saying that eventual roll-out dates for ICS would be left to individual providers. "The availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process," it said.
