Enermax DreamBass AP001 improves laptop audio output

Well, ehm Enermax is releasing the DreamBass AP001, a new USB device that seeks to improve the audio capabilities of your laptop. It's only for headphones and microphones though, it won't do anything for your internal speakers. It's based on a VIA VT1620A USB 2.0 2-channel HD audio CODEC for stereo output with 24-bit resolution and 96 kHz sample-rate. It has a signal-noise ratio of 80~90 dBA, which is not much of a departure from most laptops' HDA CODECs, if it isn't for the MOSFET-based amplifier circuit packed into the DreamBass AP001, that's capable of 80Hz/+6dB Bass. It has a 3.5 mm stereo jack and mic input. Enermax also has a variant called the AP001E, which includes earphones that hav...

McIntosh Teaches Its 50-Year-Old Tube Amp a Few New Tricks

McIntosh Teaches Its 50-Year-Old Tube Amp a Few New Tricks

Audiophiles love tube amps because of the warm, full sound they provide. But the vacuum tubes wear out, and generally requires a specialized, increasingly rare, technician to diagnose which ones are bad. High-end audio manufacturer McIntosh say their redesigned MC275 tube amp remedies part of that problem.
No, McIntosh hasn't gone and designed an everlasting vacuum tube. But it has built an indicator into each tube which will alert you to which specific tubes have gone bad. This saves you time and money tracking down a niche repair shop. Also, if you haven't noticed, this thing is also slick looking.

Marantz Bows the PM6004 Stereo Integrated Amplifier

Marantz Bows the PM6004 Stereo Integrated Amplifier

Posted on Sep 19, 2011 by MG1

The latest amp from Marantz is an upgrade to their well received PM6003. Along with minor improvements and tweaks, the 6004 features one big change. Unlike former amps from the company, the PM6004 doesn't have a single amplifier integration circuit. Both the pre-amplification and power amplification sections use their own discrete components. Marantz says that this is not only a performance increase, but a way for the company to refine the sound even more on an individual basis.
Everything else from the 6003 remains in place, including the Toroidal transformer, capacitors, heat sink mounted transistor and the same inputs. The sound has been improved though, with a greater focus on balance...
