You may remember that during the TouchPad fire sale, a few slates slipped out with a rather primitive Froyo build on them. Well, HP doesn't seem to know how the tablets hit shelves with Android on board, but its decided to release the source code for the OS nonetheless. Devs had previously called on the company to hand over the code, but the request was refused since HP had never intended for TouchPads to ship with Android, and thus were not obligated to abide by the open-source requirements. When the HP TouchPad was released in the summer of 2011 it did little to impress consumers, leading to the tablet being discontinued after a mere 49 days on the market. Remaining TouchPad stock received substantial price reductions, dropping to as low as $99 dollars during a huge fire sale. Shortly after inventory ran dry, crafty hackers had announced their intention to run the Android operating system in replace of WebOS on the TouchPad, and progress thus far has been slow, with alpha versions being released that are fairly stable but have serious bugs. If you follow the tablet market closely, you’ll be familiar with HP TouchPad that launched packing webOS and met a quick demise when sales were not good, and the tablet received some poor review scores. Some will also recall that during the TouchPad blowout sale, a few of the tablets allegedly shipped and were running Android out-of-the-box. The version of Android that those tablets were running has now been gifted from HP to the open-source geeks of the world.

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman says the company's soon-to-be open source WebOS software will eventually be better than both the Android and iOS platforms.
HP will launch the first version of the reimagined operating system in September this year after deciding to commit the storied software to the open source community.
Whitman said the result will prove to be superior to the 'closed' Apple iOS ecosystem and the undeniably 'fragmented' Android platform.
She also confirmed that the company will re-enter the tablet market, following the HP TouchPad debacle of 2011.

If you're completely satisfied with your HP Envy 15, you might want to stop reading now. There seems to be a problem with some of the 1080p Radiance Display screens, and we're afraid it's one of those things you may not be able to unsee once you know the truth. Okay, here's the news: certain screens don't seem to be able to properly reproduce red and violet colors. There's a lengthy forum thread over at Notebook Review discussing the issue, and we've also confirmed it on our review unit (see pictures below). Some users also claim they received notebooks with excessive keyboard flex and dented USB ports, but it's the red / orange issue that has the most Envy 15 owners up in arms.

HP updates webOS for TouchPad, Pre 2 and 3

HP has released new OS updates for its TouchPad tablet and Pre 2 and Pre 3 smartphones. The TouchPad gets webOS v.3.0.5, which offers faster switching in Calendar views, IM indicators, and quicker scrolling in Email. It also gets support for HTTP Live Streaming, the ability to toggle auto-correct on and off, and a handy typing shortcut - two consecutive spaces will now be entered as one space and a period, something that we have seen on many other smartphone and tablet systems. It's hard to go back to work after a few days off, but HP is sure coming back with a bang. The company this week leaked a video to Engadget that shows an incredibly thin laptop that's believed to be the newest Envy and the latest notebook to join HP's Ultrabook line.
