The top-of-the-line Nikon D5 SLR doesn't disappoint thanks to best-in-class autofocus, 4K video recording, and a full-frame image sensor.

The Nikon D5 represents a more remarkable upgrade to the D4S than its appearance suggests. With a completely revamped autofocus system, the D5 will keep up with just about any subject under just about any lighting conditions. The new sensor offers class-leading low light image quality, especially due to an improved JPEG engine, but Raws aren't the most flexible when shooting high contrast scenes. The improved, extensive customization allows for quick adaptability to fast situations, with instant AF mode overrides at the touch of a button. The D5 is a specialized tool capable of highly professional results.

The Nikon D5 will be a welcome upgrade to anyone who is already shooting with a Nikon D4s, D4, or D3s, with faster continuous shooting, improved focus system, and increased resolution as well as an expanded ISO range. Whilst you may not see the need for 3 million ISO, particularly when results are particularly noisy, Nikon has also made improvements in noise performance at other high ISO shooting speeds making it possible to shoot above ISO6400 and even up to ISO25600 without worrying about noise. Colour saturation is also better at these higher ISO speeds. If you need the best available full-frame Digital SLR, and shoot with Nikon lenses, then the Nikon D5 offers high-speed shooting, and excellent noise performance. If you are wondering whether the Nikon D5 is the best option, or alternatively whether to choose the Canon EOS 1DX Mark II - then at the moment, we'll have to wait for review samples of the 1DX II to become available so that we can see how the image quality compares.
