We wish we could quit humming, "Nobody does it better, makes us feel sad for the rest" whenever Apple stages one of its patented, hardware-and-software-in-tandem triumphs. The iMac with Retina 5K Display is a triumph because it makes everyday computing look better than it ever has, as well as making photo and video editors ascend to cloud nine. And OS X is still, one-year-of-Office-365 offers notwithstanding, the finest consumer operating system on the planet. Do you need 5,120x2,880 resolution? Probably not. But it's only a $300 premium over the old 27-inch iMac with a 1TB Fusion Drive. And this is Apple we're talking about. Turning wants into needs is what the company does.
