Windows XP or Linux on a cell phone?

Posted by neverwill on Jan 31, 2012

What do you think of installing "desktop" OS on a cell phone? I mean, not the 95/98, but the usable stuff, Windows XP or Linux for instance? They said that's easy to do, but any real advantage? Would it be usable with touch input and what would be the performance and speed expectations?

Here's the article I got this from: http://www.meetgadget.com/gadget/47051/HTC+EVO+3D/news/22457/APK+puts+Windows+95%2C+98+and+XP%2C+plus+Linux+on+the+EVO+3D

I chuckle, because I read that article this morning, and was thinking, WHY? But I guess some people just like doing some oddball stuff. Not for me. I would expect the speed to be on par with what it was like on the desktop. I can't see any real advantage to this, other than to say you did it.

I`ve previously seen installing instructions for Ubuntu on HTC HD...you can login with remote admin or SSH or whatever....but I also doesn`t see the point...

No point for me. The desktop OS are mad to be run on a screen with 8+ inches in size (which is rather small for the purpose, but usable). Running on a 4.5-inch is ridiculous. You can do most of the stuff you do with a desktop OS on Android.

Well, the guys from Canonical obviously find a good reason in getting Ubuntu on your smartphone and use it as a mobile computer.
