DaddyChicken

1 year old, and still amongst the leaders!

Created by DaddyChicken on Oct 10, 2011

Ownership period: less than 1 year.
Why on earth would you want a cell phone that has been around for about a year? It is old, stale and not worth considering. Right? Wrong!

Despite being available for a year, this phone still has what it takes to hang with the latest and greatest Android devices. Especially since it received an update to Gingerbread.

I won't touch everything, but some of the more basic points.

1. Screen.

Crisp, clean, and plenty of real estate. This device has a qHD pentile matrix screen. Pentile matrix is supposed to save power when using the screen. The pro reviews eat it alive saying it is odd. Let me tell you this. Don't form an opinion until you go look at the screen. I like the resolution of the screen. It gives you more room for web browsing. Colors look decent too. I had compared it to the HTC Sensation, and I prefer the Motorola. This is a personal thing of course. Both the Atrix and Sensation have the same resolution screen 540x960. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S2 the Atrix has a superior resolution, but it can not match the color reproduction of the Super Amoled Display. Screen size is at a sweet spot. The 4" display is perfect.

2. Battery Life.

This is a high end Android device. It has dual core processing, and runs at 1Ghz. Despite that, Motorola actually thought about battery life. This thing has an 1930ma. What does this mean? Moderate use will get you through the day. This is probably one of the better features on the Atrix.

3. Form Factor.

I could give you all the measurements, or I can tell you this. It just feels great in the hand. I have had the Atrix, the Sensation and the Galaxy S2. I found the S2 awkward to hold due to its larger size, and ultra thin body. The Sensation is gorgeous with its unibody construction, and premium materials. The Atrix, it is just the right size. It is plastic construction. It doesn't creak, but it is quite slippery. Honestly it is an ideal thickness for holding onto. Gorilla glass over the screen protects your phone from scratches.

4. Interface.

Now that this phone updated to Gingerbread it is a winner. Fact is, Motorola seriously made an error releasing this with Froyo. Stock interface is nice. The Motoblur isn't everyone's cup of tea. It does slow the device down a smidge. It isn't as snappy as the newer Galaxy S2, but doesn't feel as laggy as the Sensation. Replacing the stock launcher with ADW or Launcher pro heightens the user experience. Installing a custom ROM eliminating MOTO Blur all together makes it even snappier.

5. Community Development.

The bootloader can be unlocked on this device. Since this happened there has been a flurry of community development including CM7. This is a great device for development.

6. Fringey touchie feely stuff

a. Fingerprint sensor - yup. This device has a fingerprint reader to unlock the device if you choose to use it. At times it is a PIA, but I still use it. It is a cool feature.

b. Cameras - 5mp main/ .3mp

5MP main camera isn't bad, nothing special. The .3MP front face camera really isn't great.
