Sony SMP-N100 Pro Reviews

itreviews‘s review Edit

A good-looking user interface and reasonable digital video file support meets BBC iPlayer, Lovefim and Sky News - though this internet TV box can be slow to react. And considering it’s so close in price to a standalone 3D Blu-ray player from Sony that offers identical networking and web video on demand, we’re not sure that SMP-N100 is as good value as it first appears, but it's slicker than most rivals.

TechCrunch‘s review Edit

The SMP-N100 could have been a great media streaming device. It’s a small, unobtrusive device with the minimalist style that Sony pulls off pretty well. But the overall experience makes it pretty clear that this was built by engineers with presumably little — if any — usability analysis by actual customers. For the price, you can get something better.

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

There’s room for improvement with the N100, certainly, and you might also consider that you can get Sony Blu-ray players offering broadly similar functionality for - in the case of the Sony BDP-S480 - only around £50 more. However, if £100 is your budget, then the N100 is a simple and effective way of dragging your aging relic of a TV kicking and screaming into 2011.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

Photo-wise, the N100 can only handle JPEGs, which are replayed in HD and look superb on a decent screen. I was very impressed with how well iPlayer fared, too, especially in HD. No playback glitches suggests that a sensible amount of buffer memory is built into the player. Some XviD encodes did, however, suffer from the odd 'freeze' or lip-sync error that proved too large for the player's onboard correction to deal with. Overall, though, the N100 exceeds my expectations with ease.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

As a straight (non IPTV) media streaming device the SMP-N100 falls short. An inability to play popular formats over a network make the N100 a runner-up in a streaming race currently dominated by devices like the WD TV Live However, for those that do not own (nor plan on buying) a Sony TV, Sony Blu-ray player or PS3, this smart-looking media player could prove highly attractive. Its AV performance is solid, the interface easy to navigate and there’s some great content on tap. The SMP-N100 may also be ideal if you’re a Sony fan looking to extend the reach of the brand’s IPTV walled-garden to a bedroom or den.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

The Sony SMP-N100 is an HD media player that can wirelessly stream content from a PC to a TV over your home network. While it's price is a little on the steep side, it remains a reliable and user-friendly product.
