HDR photography

I read an article 'bout HDR in the iPhone camera app. Is this app really works? At the samplse the difference with and without this app was great. The implementation of the three pictures looks to be subtle and well-done.Has anyone try it?

I've looked at some samples as well, but to be honest I didn't see much improvement in the photos as comparison to the ones without HDR. Probably it is useful in some cases, but most of the time I believe it is just a marketing trick ;)

It seems that the HDR function helps when shooting in day light in order to avoid the overblown backgrounds. Like sky for instance.
