Amazon Kindle 2 Pro Reviews

computershopper‘s review Edit

With a recent price drop to $189, the Kindle 2 is a smart e-book choice for those who prefer wireless access to books and periodicals.

My experience trying to put my own material onto the Kindle was not good. You cannot simply download documents from your computer via the USB connection. You have to e-mail them to Amazon which converts them into a Kindle readable format and sends them back wirelessly for a supposedly nominal fee, or free by e-mail. The forthcoming Kindle DX, in addition to being larger, will apparently have the capacity to read and display PDF files without their having to be sent away for conversion. It would be good to know whether a software upgrade could give the Kindle 2 the same ability.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

A definite improvement on the original Amazon Kindle, Amazon Kindle 2 remains marginally short of being the definitive reading experience. At least that leaves Amazon room for improvement on the Kindle 3.

Engadget‘s review Edit

A lot of people are fond of calling the device an "iPod for books" as if that's just what most people want or require, and we're not so sure of that. Still, the Kindle 2 delivers an enjoyable experience with noticeable leaps in usability, and big leaps in industrial design. If you travel lightly, are a voracious reader, and absolutely love gadgets, you'll probably get this device.

The slick design is a real winner. The loss of the memory card slot does not detract much from its use. However, the lack of the user replaceable battery will shorten the life of the device and/or add to the cost of continued use. Also, the lack of the carrying case without any reduction in price is regrettable. Although the technology is wonderful and the Kindle is an excellent reading device, at USD 359 it is expensive.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

While it lacks books' individuality and charm, it adds features such as the ability to annotate and search ebooks, and look up words in a dictionary. It's a good device. Not yet great, but good.

The Kindle 2 is hands-down the best e-book yet, but we wish it cost less.

The eInk e-paper display is, without a doubt, the main selling point this product has to offer, since it's a lot less tiresome for one's eyes than an LCD or OLED display, for example. Also, this display requires less power in order to work, which translates into a longer functioning life, but users who've never laid eyes on an e-paper solution might have some problems getting accustomed to it.

Digital Trends‘s review Edit

There are a few other e-book readers available, including the iRex and the new BeBook, which is cheaper. The Kindle 2 is the only device that offers such as wide selection of well-known books, including almost all of the current best-sellers, and they are just a 5-way navigation button click away.

The Kindle 2 is Amazon's second attempt to bring e-books to the masses. The new version brings a number of improvements to the line, with a higher contrast screen, a slimmer, lighter design, longer battery life and faster page turns. With an 800x600 resolution e-ink screen and unlimited free Internet access, the Kindle 2 makes a compelling choice for anyone who enjoys reading.
