Level 2 I'm assuming your touchpad isn't recognized as an Input Device? If so, have you tried installing Gsynaptics? Try it, and if that doesn't work or give you errors, try looking at the following threads:

Something should do the trick, btw what's your brand and model? I did notice a few people having problems with the touchpad on Sony VAIO notebooks.
